Job summary

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust are looking for candidates for this new substantive post to replace a highly successful locum consultant role, which has been split between our busy paediatric ophthalmology service and our corneal service. This combined role has enabled excellent management of paediatric external eye disease while maintaining and developing the adult corneal service.

As the role, and our department, continues to develop we aim to refine the provision of urgent eye care so that patients are streamed to sub-speciality experts at their first appointment.

The successful applicant will therefore be expected to deliver acute clinics for our busy eye casualty service as part of their expertise in the management of corneal and external eye disease, and will also require significant experience in the management of paediatric eye conditions to support the paediatric team.

Main duties of the job

The key duties and responsibilities are: -

Delivery and development of the Specialist Corneal service, including corneal transplant surgery and anterior segment repair. Delivery of acute external eye disease clinics as part of our Urgent care service Delivery of paediatric external eye disease care with additional general paediatric and strabismus support to paediatric service. Clinical and other administration as required by agreement General Ophthalmology responsibilities, including on call and care of inpatients Teaching and training of Oxford deanery trainees, junior staff and undergraduates Active involvement in Research and Clinical Governance

Qualifications and Training

Essential

MB, BS or equivalent GMC registrable qualifications General training in Ophthalmology to CCT / CESR level Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview (CESR must already be held if that is the route by which specialist registration was achieved) Recognised Higher degree Recognised Fellowship (level 4 training) in anterior segment & cataract surgery Recognised Fellowship (Level 4 training) in Paediatric Ophthalmology

Experience

Essential

Appropriate training in Ophthalmology with additional training in cornea to specialist level Training to specialist level in Paediatric ophthalmology Evidence of executive decision-making at consultant level

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Essential

Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant Evidence for surgical and clinical skills in Ophthalmic surgery to undertake a consultant role Good personal and interpersonal skills Good spoken and written English Communication skills should be highly developed Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates Experience of clinical audit
