Job Requirements

To be the airport for everyone, whatever their journey

As the Project Manager (Sustainability) at London Gatwick, I'm thrilled to be a part of the journey towards Net Zero emissions by 2030. With over 90 buildings on site, we're committed to ensuring that each one complies with our NetZero commitment.

Our ambitious objective, driven by our shareholders and with the full backing of our business, was publicised earlier this year and is a demonstration of London Gatwick's commitment to sustainable aviation. Projects across the site will include full boiler replacements, heat source pumps, and integrating charging points for Electric Vehicles using renewable energy.

This will be a market leading, exciting and diverse programme of work, which will see you engaging with a wide range of stakeholders (up to the board level) and leading a variety of Mechanical Engineering focused projects. It includes workstreams that will achieve campus decarbonisation, reduced water use, infrastructure for electric vehicles, renewable energy and reduced energy use which must all be delivered in a live operational environment.

You will lead the full project lifecycle, with the opportunity to lead concepts from the idea phase to planning, executing and delivering large scale projects. The projects you lead will be instrumental in London Gatwick Airport's transition to NetZero by 2030

What is the role?

Reporting to the Programme Manager (Sustainability), your role will involve the technical, commercial and financial management of a range of projects.  You'll be responsible for taking complex projects through various stages, from design and procurement to construction and delivery.

You'll be focused high quality results and handing over the project confident in the knowledge you have played a pivotal role in helping London Gatwick grow, as well as delivering something impactful for the business and its customers.

Other duties include:

  • Ensuring projects are completed within the planned budget, timeline and quality/compliance standards.  Also, leading the smooth transfer of the project to the relevant departments ensuring Airport Operational Readiness planning and activities are in place
  • Continuously developing and upholding world class health, safety, and environmental standards across projects and associated contractors. We aim to achieve health, safety and environmental excellence.
  • Uncovering and finding solutions to challenges and risks throughout the projects, highlighting these to contractors, and making sure project timelines stay on track and the airport continues to operate smoothly without disruptions
  • Taking responsibility for fulfilling laws and statutory obligations applicable to the project, including compliance to standards and necessary planning permissions
  • Helping the team grow by contributing to the development of standards, managing, motivating, coaching and mentoring team members.  You'll be excited about helping talented individuals reach their potential.

What are we looking for?

The live environment at London Gatwick requires all our teams to have a flexible and adaptable approach, with problem solving skills and an innovative outlook. Involved in projects from inception to completion you will work alongside multiple stakeholders. In addition, this role requires:

  • Previous experience as a Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager delivering large projects or multi-year programmes within the construction or infrastructure sectors, typically over £10 million.  A background in construction, on projects with a focus on Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing or heating.
  • Qualified to practitioner level in project management (e.g., APMP Project Management Qualification or PRINCE2 Practitioner)
  • Experience of managing complex projects and stakeholder requirements
  • Experiencing handling several projects at the same time, especially when they need to work together or overlap in some way
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas in a simple way to multiple stakeholders

What's in it for you?
