This is a fixed term appointment.

The post-holders will contribute to the delivery of high quality care of general medical and elderly care patients during normal weekday working hours, working alongside trainees of differing grades and consultants organised into 3 ward based teams. This post is perfect for consolidating General Medical or Care of Older People experience whilst taking a step off or back on the training ladder. We are a very supportive department and we have designed this job to allow equal training opportunities. We will offer targeted careers advice and dedicated supervision/mentoring to support your revalidation requirements, to grow as a clinician and plan for your future career.

The posts offer opportunities to expand the knowledge and skills gained in Care of Older People subspecialties – such as Parkinson’s disease, orthogeriatrics, falls, continence and community care - in an extremely well supported environment.

2 of the 3 posts will also include developing and delivering undergraduate medical education at the Whittington Hospital for UCL medical students in COOP and will be Clinical teaching fellow appointments – and Applications to complete a PGCert or MSc in Medical education will be encouraged.

There is no on-call commitment for these posts.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The working hours for this post will be Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 16:30 although we will expect the post holder to work with their team flexibly in deciding the exact working pattern that best suits the post-holder and team. There is no on-call requirement for this post.

The post holder:

Is responsible to the Consultants and Registrar for the execution of their professional duties. They shall ensure that all patients admitted to the department are medically examined and assure that robust and appropriate treatment plans. They will attend ward rounds as arranged with Senior staff to acquaint themselves with patient management, and also at other times daily to ensure that all investigations, treatments ordered are carried out. They will ensure that good communication is maintained with staff in all specialties to the benefit of the patient. The will work as a valued member of the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to meetings and team decisions on patient care. They are responsible for the daily maintenance of in-patient notes, preparing Discharge letters (TTAs) for immediate dispatch to the patient’s General Practitioner and communicate with primary care and community services as needed. They shall make themselves available to talk to patients’ relatives if required, discuss treatment escalation plans and advance care planning decisions as needed.

In carrying out their duties the Doctor will always be responsible for keeping their Senior Staff informed of serious cases on the ward, deaths, and any other matter which it is deemed necessary that their attention should be drawn to. Any cases in which there is doubt must be referred to a senior member of staff.

During their appointment they will be expected to carry out such duties as assigned to them by staff of the department and perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances Clinical teaching fellow appointments will include a day of ‘non-clinical educational activity’ for the development and delivery of undergraduate education to 5th year UCL Medical students rotating through COOP.
