National Lottery Heritage Fund Project Manager
5 months ago
Job Title: National Lottery Heritage Fund Project Manager
Contract Type: Approximately 16 months
Department: Research
Salary range: Up to £16,000 upon discussion at appointment. Happy to consider contractors and consultants
Closing Date: 6th August 2024
Location: Putney, Southwest London
Scope
The RHN is a leading national centre of excellence, providing adult person-centred services that span the entire care pathway from post-acute rehabilitation services to end of life care, for people with complex Neuro-disability and their families, underpinned by a strong research and education programme.
The Project Manager will work with the RHN Archivist to administrate and deliver the project within the agreed timescale and budget. The successful applicant will be the central point of contact for the NLHF, Digital: Works and all patients, therapists, and other staff who are involved in the project.
Project Background
Thanks to a generous grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) in 2019, the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) was able to catalogue, preserve, and digitise much of its archive collection.
A new collaboration, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the arts and educational charity Digital:Works will build on these foundations in time to mark the 170th anniversary of the RHN. This follow-up project will gather historical content and create a series of interviews that will become a documentary film. Through extensive research of our newly-accessible archive, the project will uncover and reassemble the stories of past patients. Through the recording of brand new oral histories and the use of specially-adapted technologies, the project will support current patients to express themselves and leave a lasting legacy of their experiences. This is especially important because – due to the seriousness of their disabilities – people with brain injuries often need to rely on others to communicate.
Project Aims
The central focus of the project is the RHN’s patients – past and present – whose voices are underrepresented in heritage discourse. Through the course of the project, and with the assistance of Digital: Works, the RHN will:
Use the archive collection to tell the stories of past patients. Open the archive to current patients through a series of accessible workshops. Develop skills of patients through training in heritage and oral history. Enhance links with the local community by collaborating with disabled actors. Make our archive more inclusive by recording reflections on the RHN’s history, and the life stories of, current patients. Make our archive more relevant through new digital content, which strengthens public understanding of RHN history.Skills, Qualification and Experience
Higher qualification and extensive professional experience in the heritage sector, preferably within a health care setting Strong research background and thorough understanding of Victorian health or social care institutions Experience in handling and working with fragile archive material, including photographic and/or audio visual collections Familiarity with using archives, records, or other collections management systems, particularly AtoM Awareness of GDPR and copyright regulations relating to archive collections that contain highly sensitive personal data Experience of conducting and/or editing oral history interviews or podcasts Friendly and empathetic manner, with training or significant experience in communicating with patients with complex disabilities Knowledge of image editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop Knowledge of web content management systems, such as WordPress Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom Previous involvement in project management and budget maintenance (desirable) Previous experience of supervising a small group of volunteers (desirable)
To undertake archive research into past patients, aspects of everyday life, and key individuals from the RHN’s history and to recruit 2-3 volunteers to assist with this work To liaise with departments, therapy teams, and patients to encourage participation in the project and to recruit a ‘Production Team’ from interested patients, residents, and staff. To organise a series of workshops about the history of the RHN for the Production Team, including collaborating with a drama group and hiring period costume to bring relevant people and other details to life. To arrange training in oral history and interviewing skills by Digital:Works for the Production Team, and to attend such training. To oversee the interviewing of patients, staff, and actors (in character) about their lives and about the RHN, and to explore any adaptations for audio and video recording with our assistive technologies team. To work collectively with Digital:Works to create a documentary film using the interviews produced, the archival research uncovered, and the RHN’s historic audio visual material. To organise a launch event and community screenings for the documentary film, eg. at Wandsworth Archives. To liaise with the communications team to produce a bespoke website and a short series of podcasts for the project. To provide progress reports and budget updates both internally and to the NLHF, and to work with a heritage consultant on the final evaluation report. To ensure that images and information contained within the interviews and documentary film are managed lawfully and in accordance with GDPR and copyright regulations. Any other relevant duties as may be required.
