Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our passionate emergency department team here at West Suffolk Hospital. We are looking to recruit an ACP in Emergency Medicine where you will practice with a high degree of autonomy within the department seeing a wide range of complex patient presentations.

The post is open to both qualified and trainee advanced clinical practitioners and you will be involved with working within the four pillars of advanced practice, Clinical Practice, Leadership and Management, Education and Research. Trainees will be provided with apprenticeship to study for an Advanced Practitioner (AP) Degree MSc (Level 7) programme in line with the Trust framework for advanced practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will practice as an ACP using a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage, and evaluate clinical nursing and medical care in the management of patients.

You will be responsible for the initial treatment of patients presenting with undifferentiated or undiagnosed conditions and make professional autonomous decisions regarding treatment within your scope of practice.

Draw upon a diverse range of knowledge to determine evidence based therapeutic interventions, which will include prescribing medication where legally allowed and review medications for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice, national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice to optimise treatment.

Liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team to allow the most appropriate treatment and plan the safe discharge of patients when required.

Work in partnership with patients, families and carers and support the individual to proactively manage their wellbeing and life.

Participate in audit, clinical governance and other clinical meetings where the outcomes and recommendations have the potential to improve the quality of care; give case presentations as required.

Teach and support medical staff, students and newly qualified/less experienced ANPs/ENP, junior and senior nurses, and other staff, as appropriate in the clinical setting.

Clinical Practice

Assess, differentially diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate individual treatment interventions for patients by virtue of expert clinical judgement and close liaison with members of the MDT. Use expertise and decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses. Initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions which may include prescribing medicines, therapies, lifestyle advice and care. Exercise professional judgement to manage risk appropriately, especially where there may be complex and unpredictable events and supporting teams to do likewise to ensure safety of individuals, families and carers. Ensure compliance with their respective code of professional conduct and work within their scope of practice. Work in conjunction with the MDT to clearly define values, direction and policies impacting upon care. Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

Registered healthcare professional Evidence of continuing professional development Level 6 1st level degree and willing to work towards a recognised advanced practice qualification at level 7 including advanced physical assessment and consultation skills and non-medical prescribing Level 2 Maths and English (GCSE grade A*-C or O-level grades 1-6) or recognised functional skills assessment and qualification

Desirable

Possession of MSc in Advanced Practice or recognised equivalent by HEE Centre Advancing Practice Significant post qualification experience in a relevant clinical field Registered independent non-medical prescriber Mentor/assessor and/or teaching qualification Participation in research or audit projects ALS provider/instructor Evidence of mandatory training updates Management qualification / leadership training

Experience and knowledge

Post registration experience, a considerable amount of which must be as a fully qualified healthcare professional within your chosen registered profession Evidence of teaching, supervision and assessment skills Ability to respond to, prioritise and analyse health conditions and ensure effective interventions are actioned in a timely manner Ability to deal effectively with clinical issues within defined procedures and guidelines Ability to work with undifferentiated and undiagnosed healthcare problems with support and under direct supervision Evidence of management skills gained through theory and or practice Experience of mentoring and developing staff Broad post registration clinical experience Ability to work autonomously and within a team Ability to demonstrate the implementation of research into practice Ability to undertake required clinical duties/procedures
