Economist Education is seeking a Deputy Executive Editor to maintain our expanding portfolio of courses for professionals, and to write and edit content to support the division’s growth. 

Accountabilities

Take responsibility for commissioning and processing updates to our online courses, which cover subjects from international relations and climate change to fintech and critical thinking. Edit and write blogs, ensuring a good flow of content. Review marketing materials for accuracy and impact. Help create new courses, providing editorial and logistical support, with the potential for taking on additional responsibilities over time. Help improve our courses, with reference to student and tutor feedback. Uphold our high editorial standards and values as we expand our portfolio. Contribute ideas and research to ensure our courses meet students’ needs. Support customised training workshops as required. Occasionally represent our courses and expertise in client calls when needed. In all this, collaborate with colleagues across the Education team, journalists at The Economist and external contributors and partners.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

Education and training

First-class degree or higher

Previous work experience 

At least five years of experience as a journalist/editor Familiarity with The Economist’s editorial standards, values and style is an advantage Experience of working on projects across editorial and commercial teams is desirable

Knowledge

Knowledge of topics relevant to our course portfolio is an advantage Some knowledge of online education is desirable

IT

Familiarity with web-based publishing systems Familiarity with social media

Languages 

Excellent spoken and written English

First-rate writing, editing and analytical skills Sound editorial judgment Ability to translate complex issues into digestible content A decent level of numeracy Confidence to present work and ideas to colleagues Ability to juggle tasks calmly and successfully Good collaborative skills Good project-management skills
