Based on the South Bank in Waterloo, London, the National Theatre (NT), has three theatres, a bookshop, cafes and bars which are all open to the public. Behind the scenes, there are workshops where we make sets, props and costumes for the shows, spaces for actors to rehearse and offices for all the administration staff.

Working with the Lighting, Sound & Video and Stages Departments (which are all part of the Technical Department), you will learn about and understand the role of a technician within the performing arts industry whilst getting hands on experience. You will learn the practical skills necessary to work as a technician in a theatrical environment, and will work with top industry professionals in all of the NT’s spaces. with your core duties being;

Under the direction of NT Staff, clean, maintain and use a range of theatre lighting, sound and video equipment, including radio mics, moving lights and projectors.  Undertake In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. (ISITEE) Work to agreed deadlines. Work on stage, on shows and events when required, installing and operating technical equipment. This will sometimes involve evening and weekend work. Learn how to work at height or in small spaces safely. Participate in safety checks, and weekly planning meetings. Maintain high standards of operations and good housekeeping at all times Participate in the provision of a safe working environment, acting within the company’s Health & Safety policy at all times. Participate in other training as necessary and appropriate, including visiting other workplaces on placement. Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the National Theatre’s representatives.

At all times you will be expected to:

Take responsibility for being on time and always working safely and considerately. Take responsibility for completing your college work and making sure your manager knows when a college assessor is visiting. Behave professionally, including keeping workspaces neat and tidy. To work at height and sometimes in small spaces, training will be given to you before you do this. You will sometimes be asked to work evenings and weekends, and will be given time off in the week to make up for it (this is called Time Off in Lieu – TOIL)

By the end of the apprenticeship you will have a working knowledge of:

How to clean, maintain and use a range of theatre lighting, sound and video equipment, including radio mics, moving lights and projectors.  You will be involved in ISITEE testing (In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment) all our technical equipment and will learn how best to clean and store it. How to set up technical systems such as sound systems, video projectors and lighting rigs.  How to safely use theatrical flying, lifting and rigging systems, which suspend scenery (and sometimes actors) off the floor, and how to use the NT’s automated systems for moving scenery. Read, understand and use a range of theatre related plans. Write and follow a basic Risk Assessment. Identify a range of theatre technical equipment and understand its uses. Operate under supervision a range of technical theatre equipment. Understand theatre jargon and processes. Create, follow and update paperwork used on shows.

Training to be provided:

Creative Industries Production Technician – Creative Venue Technician Pathway Level 3 Standard.

A CVT provides technical support for the construction, rehearsal, presentation and removal of a live performance. They are multi-skilled across a wide range of technical disciplines. They possess a broad level of knowledge relevant to the venue in which they operate. CVTs will be competent in lighting, audio, video and stage systems related to live performance. They apply these competencies to their resident premises and production. They are skilled in stagecraft techniques such as operating stage machinery and performing scene changes. This allows them to set up, rig, operate, maintain and carry out basic repairs of technical equipment used in creative venues. 

Duty 1 Interpret system specifications for productions, live performance and events. These systems can include sound or lighting or video.

Duty 2 Assemble and configure systems to meet the specification requirements for sound, lighting, power or video.

Duty 3 Test, troubleshoot and maintain equipment and systems.

Duty 4 Collaborate with stakeholders and work with team members.

Duty 5 Operate and maintain technical equipment.

Duty 6 Dynamically risk assess the work environment and situation. Adapt working practices to ensure the safety of self and others.

Duty 7 Disassemble and store technical equipment safely and efficiently at the end of the event, ensuring that the integrity of the components is maintained.

Duty 12 (Creative Venue Technician (CVT)) Monitor and operate systems or services relevant to own workplace.

Duty 13 (Creative Venue Technician (CVT)) Assemble scenery and staging systems to meet performance requirements.

Duty 14 (Creative Venue Technician (CVT)) Carry out live scene changes and operate stage and suspension systems.

Duty 15 (Creative Venue Technician (CVT)) Inspect systems or services relevant to own workplace and carry out maintenance, basic repairs, and upkeep.

Things to consider:

As this is a training position, we are not looking for experience in technical theatre, but for someone who has practical skills, which can be applied to this apprenticeship. You will need to show us that you can problem solve, can work well in a team, and will be committed to completing this apprenticeship. An interest in audio, networks or electrical systems would be useful.

Future prospects:

The National Theatre are committed to training and supporting an apprentice and having them become a part of their technical theatre team after successful completion of the apprenticeship.
