Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department as an advanced (senior) Biomedical scientist in Blood Transfusion working alongside laboratory based Biomedical Scientists, Advanced Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Section managers, Cross-site technical leads, Consultant Haematologists, Clinical Directors and Pathology General Managers to drive improvements to service.

Applications are invited for the position of Advanced (senior) Biomedical Scientist Blood Transfusion.

The post is based at Airedale General Hospital in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department however applicants will be required to work at any of the IPS laboratories as required. The successful candidate will play a senior role in maintaining the quality management system at AGH.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an experienced HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist who has the skills to provide continuity to the QMS, ensuring that the high standards already established within the department are maintained. To be considered for the role you must be suitably qualified (see Person Specification) and have significant discipline specific experience and knowledge in Blood Transfusion and Quality Management. The post holder must be willing and able to participate in working rotas including day shifts, night shifts, weekend long days, bank holidays, early shifts and late shifts to meet the needs of the service. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the department to maintain common policies and procedures within the IPS QMS. Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well- motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working is essential. All of these skills and attributes are in line with the Trust's Right Care Behaviours.

The Haematology/Transfusion department hosts Sysmex XN auto-analysers, ACL-TOP 550 coagulation analysers, Alifax/Alifax roller ESR analysers & Ortho Vision blood transfusion analysers.

Qualifications

Essential

Holds HCPC State Registration as Biomedical Scientist BSc Biomedical Science degree or equivalent. IBMS Specialist Diploma in either Haematology with Hospital Transfusion Practice or Transfusion Science or BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion. MSc in blood transfusion Science or equivalent qualification or experience ( at least 5 years Haematology/Transfusion senior Biomedical Scientist laboratory experience). Relevant post graduate qualification conducive with Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science Status.

Desirable

Membership of profession body such as IBMS Holds a General Management Qualification

Significant discipline specific experience and knowledge including understanding of the BSQR's and BCSH guidelines pertinent to provision of a blood transfusion service. Experience of working within an NHS Blood Transfusion laboratory. Experience of Routine testing in transfusion science Evidence of Continuous Profession Development. Experience of Pathology IT systems. Experience of Pathology Quality management systems. Experience of training and competency assessment of blood transfusion staff. Experience of implementing new techniques and technologies. Experience of writing/ reviewing SOPs in line with local or national guidelines.
