Job summary

This really is an amazing opportunity for anyone who may have ambitions of working in senior management in the future. This will give you first-hand experience in bed management; major incident and business continuity management; staffing and troubleshooting; administering expert clinical interventions across the Trust and gain experience in Emergency Department pathways. You will gain an insight into the elective surgical patient flow as well as the general emergency patient flow. Sitting within the Operational Directorate, you will gain a corporate view of hospital management.

Main duties of the job

As a band 7 on the site team at Darent Valley, you will take a leading role in the co-ordination of all site services and in all major incidents, business continuity and critical incidents under the supervision of a clinical site manager. You will occasionally be asked to step into the clinical site manager's role in times unplanned absence where you will chair the daily safety and capacity meetings ensuring the senior colleagues you work with are fully briefed on all aspects of patient flow throughout the hospital. You will lead on projects within the team involving the development of team staff and team services.

This position will require you to work hour shifts. You will be required to work long days and nights as well as weekends, some flexibility with shifts can be considered.

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities:

Assist in the fielding of bleep calls to on-call Drs to enable more efficient working of the hospital at night team. This will be done by initial triage and assessment of the sick patient and by utilising relevant protocols.

Carry out a range of expanded skills including Verification of Expected Death, as outlined in Trust Policy within competence.

To undertake advanced patient assessment, advising on immediate care or referral for medical intervention and developing specialised programmes of care to ensure prompt and effective management of patients.

To act as a self-directed practitioner who directs, provides and evaluates patientcare, founded on nursing and medical practice models; and demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

Make and receive direct referrals to and from the relevant members of the multi-professional teams.

Provide rapid response and support for patients identified by the NEWs score. As appropriate order diagnostics, interpret results, advise on specialised treatments and/or refer to relevant health care professional.

Work with colleagues and ward managers in developing standards of care and promoting new ways of working with staff who work primarily out of hours.

To provide senior nursing and clinical advice to support the practice of junior nurses working during the out of hours period. This will include practical assistance, identification of training needs and providing input to appraisals of staff who are line managed by staff who rarely work with them.

Carry out a range of Risk Assessments on patients or staff to ascertain health and safety concerns. Record and report such assessments using agreed criteria in order to ensure continuing care needs are met, risks identified and actions taken.

Respond immediately to all emergency calls to fire, cardiac arrest, violent incidents missing patients and other clinical emergencies.

Essential

Registered General Nurse Management Course or LEO HDU course ALS course

Desirable

Diploma level or 1st level degree Patient Assessment Course Critical Care course - ENB 199, 100 or 124

Experience

Essential

Substantial experience at band 5 and proven experience at band 6, working in an acute medical or surgical area of nursing.

Desirable

Proven management experience. Experience dealing with NIV/CPAP

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

A skilled clinical nurse IV cannualtion and IV administration skills. Phlebotomy skills Able to respond to the need for leadership both in clinical and managerial settings. Conflict management skills Ability to diffuse a situation before it escalates into a complaint.

Desirable

Proven ability to manage a clinical environment in terms of clinical and physical resources.
