Main duties of the job

St George's Hospital is the primary teaching hospital in south-west London and provides all of the tertiary specialities. Clinical fellows are required to work as part of the critical care medical and multidisciplinary team on adult intensive care. The duration of the post is 6 or 12 months. The fellow will be part of the ICU POCUS team. The clinical fellow in echocardiography will receive specific mentoring and training in echocardiography as applied to critical care. This is to answer the perceived need for critical care echocardiography training and the new BSE/ICS accreditation processes. This will include transthoracic as well as transoesophageal echocardiography and the aim is to achieve advanced level of echocardiography (BSE, EDEC or similar). The post holder will also be encouraged to make use of a whole range of teaching opportunities including in-house courses and our echocardiography simulator laboratory and weekly echocardiography meetings. There may be some opportunity to attend the cardiology outpatient echocardiography lab by arrangement. The post holder is not required to have any previous echocardiography experience, but this post is aimed at doctors who intend a career in intensive care medicine

About us

This is a 21 bed facility admitting over 1500 adult general medical, surgical and trauma patients per year and able to provide the full spectrum of respiratory, cardiovascular and renal support. The post holder will assist with the management of patients with severe polytrauma, post-operative high risk surgical cases and patients with severe medical conditions requiring organ support. The clinical fellow in General ICU is usually the first point of contact for patients that may intensive care admission on wards or in the emergency department. The successful candidate will be able to develop the necessary skills to see patient referrals and evaluate where, how and when to admit a deteriorating patient and how to stabilise and manage the patient in ICU. There is continuous support from a Consultant available 24/7. General ICU is a busy unit with plenty of research and educational activities that form part of a structured educational program that successful candidates will participate in. Members of our team hold, or have held, senior positions in International and National Societies.
