Job summary

We are looking for a Band 5 operating department practitioner to work in theatres, recovery, admissions/ ambulatory lounges. The post holder is responsible for assessment of the perioperative care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation without direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for being in-charge of the ward and supervising junior members of staff. The post holder will be a key member in relation to the development of practice in theatres. They will be working independently/autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional actions. Ensuring the safety and well-being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with the senior staff and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of clinical practice and staff development as part of the theatre team. As a member of the theatre team perform the tasks of anaesthetic assistant following all checks and procedures as laid down in National / Theatre Policy. As a member of the theatre team perform the tasks of anaesthetic assistant and support other members of the multidisciplinary team. To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff by acting as a mentor with the support of their senior colleagues. The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant documentation without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures in place to support safe patient care To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified as appropriate to knowledge and training. Skills and Knowledge

Strong skills in preparing and maintaining a sterile field, handling surgical instruments, and ensuring the correct functionality of equipment Excellent ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in the perioperative environment, ensuring safety and comfort at all times Proficiency in assisting anaesthetists with induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia, including airway management and patient monitoring Competence in providing post-operative care, including patient assessment and management of complications in the recovery room

Desirable

Ability to make quick, informed decisions in high-pressure situations, particularly during surgical emergencies Experience with the EPIC healthcare software system, including managing patient records, ordering tests, and retrieving results. Ability to navigate the system efficiently to support clinical decision-making and patient care Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development and commitment to ongoing learning Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues

Managing Conflict/Stress

Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced and often high-stress environment. Skills in managing personal stress and supporting colleagues in stressful situations to ensure patient safety and team cohesion.
