Your new role

Here at Hitachi Rail, we have a superb opportunity for an experienced Commodity Manager to join our Procurement team based from our UK manufacturing site in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. As a Commodity Manager you will be responsible for the procurement of a portfolio of commodities, responsible for source-to-contract activities resulting in Hitachi Rail being able to perform its Rolling Stock, Assembly, Service and Maintenance activities.

Using your prior experience in manufacturing, service & maintenance environments, as the Commodity Manager you will oversee, develop, implement and deliver contracts within a portfolio of commodities. It is crucial within this role to be able to conduct and lead business reviews with suppliers and be comfortable with both the delivery and receiving of feedback from internal and external stakeholders.

Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate must be flexible to travel both within the UK and other locations across Europe as and when required.

Other role responsibilities include…

Develop and agree the commodity strategy for a portfolio of commodities Setting project procurement plans in line with the agreed strategy and execute accordingly. Identification, evaluation, approval and set-up of potential suitable suppliers for the commodity portfolio. Setting sourcing strategy for new contract opportunities. Run sourcing events (RFX, e-auction etc.) based on agreed sourcing strategy. Manage source to contract activities in line with Hitachi staged approval process. Contract drafting, negotiation, approval and award. Support Materials & Vendor set-up in ERP/MRP systems across Hitachi Rail global entities Lead contract handover reviews with manufacturing / service & maintenance teams and Contract Managers (specific Commodities) Escalation point for contract claim negotiation Support business stakeholders in all exceptional cases of supplier non-performance Lead contract handover reviews with MFG / S&M teams Closely engaged with Operational procurement teams to ensure on-time on-budget delivery of materials and services Conduct supplier performance reviews Conduct supplier risk management activity (financial, capacity reviews etc.) Identification and management of value chain improvement initiatives

About you

Applicants should be able to demonstrate all of the essential requirements listed below:

Essential

Commodity management experience (although not specifically in Rail) Able to negotiate directly with suppliers for all contract provisions Experience in a manufacturing or service & maintenance environment is essential. Good working knowledge of SAP/equivalent ERP systems including PO, Material Master, PIR, Contract management Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams, enabling a strong representation of the procurement function and able to interact across all levels of the business. Strong understanding of Contract law and contract drafting for different types of Product / Services. Prior experience of using cost saving methodologies e.g. value engineering, logistics & packaging optimisation. Experience and understanding of Contract Lifecycle Management tools Sound commercial acumen, strong work ethic, highly motivated and able to work under minimum supervision. Excellent communicator both written and verbal with the ability to be highly organised and hold strong time management skills. Demonstrates perseverance, patience and commitment for long term success within sometimes a challenging/changing environment. Good knowledge of Excel, PowerBi and other Microsoft office packages

Desirable

Experience working in a Global, multi-cultural, matrixed organisation would be beneficial within this role. Educated to degree level Member of Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) or appropriate professional institute or relevant experience.
