Due to promotion within the team we are looking for a dynamic and motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Children's Orthopaedic team at the Nottingham Children's Hospital, QMC campus. The post will cover Orthopaedics (inpatients and outpatients).

We have a full time permanent opportunity available.

Part-time applicants welcome at a minimum of If part-time we will need you to work a Monday, but other working days can be considered at interview

You will join an experienced and enthusiastic Occupational Therapy team with the opportunity to develop your acute clinical skills working with children and young people.

Main duties of the job

In addition to the below summary you need to familiarise yourself with full Job Description and Person Specification documents attached to this advert.

Assess and treat children and young people (and their families) to promote their independence in their activities of daily living and support hospital discharge, as well as supporting Orthopaedic splinting where required.

Work as part of multidisciplinary teams in both in and outpatient settings

You will have excellent communication and team working skills.

You will have a flexible approach and the ability to manage your own time and workload in what is a fast paced working environment.

The post has a requirement that you manage and support qualified staff, Support Staff and Students on Clinical Placement allowing you to develop your leadership, managerial and teaching skills.

You will deputise for the Band 7 leads as appropriate.

You will be required to work on the weekend paediatric rota and must have the relevant skills and competencies to do so.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Nottingham Children's Hospital (NCH) is based at the Queens Medical Centre campus and is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). We provide In-patient and out-patient care for children up to the age of 19 years old.

With 97 beds, we care for around 40,000 children each year from Nottinghamshire and beyond, treating a full range of conditions, including planned and emergency treatment and surgery, Burns and Plastics, Neurological conditions, Oncology, Paediatric critical care, Renal conditions and transplantation, and Spinal and Orthopaedic care.

The Childrens Therapy team at NCH is a friendly and supportive department who work closely alongside the wider MDT, providing excellent evidence based care and innovative ways of working.

Throughout NUH we have a diverse range of AHP and support staff who work together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to supported by our Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction.

Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential

Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy Health Professional Council registration as an Occupational Therapist Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities

Experience

Essential

Experience of contributing to the clinical education of less experienced staff or undergraduate OT students Experience of contributing to service development Experience of using evidence based practice in own practice Experience of delegation and contributing to the operational management of the team

Communication skills

Essential

Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.

Analytical/Judgement skills

Essential

Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex patients Independently work through the OT process with complex patients

Planning and organisation

Essential

Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity Able to make judgements about the prioritizing of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process

Physical skills

Essential

Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation Keyboard skills

Other

Essential

Flexibility to work elsewhere in Therapies or as required across both campuses Flexible working schedules including participation in weekend rosters where required
