The Lead Physician Associate (PA) will provide expert clinical care under the supervision of the consultant haematology team. They will work closely with specialist trainees, internal medicine/foundation year trainees and advanced/clinical nurse specialists.

The role will be appropriate for an established PA who has demonstrable extensive clinical experience of practising within clinical haematology. The Lead PA will have direct managerial responsibilities for physician associates working within the haematology department.

The Department of Clinical Haematology provides comprehensive care for all haematological disorders, both malignant and non-malignant.

We have a total haematology inpatient bed base of ~100. A majority of this is within our state of the art Grafton Way building which includes a 10 bedded ICU.

There is also a cellular therapy unit, providing accredited facilities to support the department's ambitious programme in stem cell harvests, gene therapy and immunotherapy and a large apheresis unit, performing both therapeutic and harvesting procedures.

There are active clinical and research programmes in lymphoma, leukaemia, myeloma, transplant, immunotherapy, coagulation, TTP, blood transfusion and red cell disorders. The directorate works closely with laboratory haematology services, which are managed as part of the clinical support division.

Main duties of the job

The key duties of the role include:

Delivering clinical care, under consultant supervision, across all aspects of haematology inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory care pathways, with a focus on delivering high quality care in diagnostic haematology clinics and specialist haematology daycare. Establishing an educational programme and overseeing professional development of PAs according to national FPARCP guidance. Establishing competency-based roles, responsibilities and scope of practice, clinical guidelines for the workforce in inpatient, outpatient and day care settings Working with consultant clinical leads and management to establish an impact assessment on other medical staffing groups (consultants, SpRs, Fellows, SHOs,& ANPs) to reconfigure existing clinical workstreams to support junior doctor training and make a financial case for future posts. Managerial responsibility for mentorship and appraisal of physician associates working within haematology.

Professional Qualifications

Essential

BSc degree prior to undertaking PA programme PGDip/MSc in Physician Associates Studies from a recognised UK training programme Valid Physician Associate national certification examination (PANE), and if applicable recertification assessment at 6-years Membership of the Faculty of Physician Associates Registration with the FPA Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR) (and subsequent GMC registration when in effect) Teaching qualification

Desirable

Valid advanced life support certification. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate.

Clinical Experience

Essential

Clinical training/experience in adult general medicine. Demonstratable specialist knowledge and extensive clinical experience of haematology, including general haematology and, haemato-oncology.
