Job summary

This is a 9 + 1 PA full time Consultant Haematologist post. The Trust wide post completes a team of 8 Consultants working across the Trust. The appointee is expected to be broadly skilled and to take part in all the clinical and laboratory work of the Department. This post includes the responsibility of a Clinical Lead role in an area of interest appropriate to the expertise and interest of the incoming candidate which could include VTE, Transfusion or Haemoglobinopathies.

A Consultant wishing to work less than full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. Modification of the job content would be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with colleagues. The post is available immediately.

Main duties of the job

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive Haematology service to patients.

To comply with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' at all ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Leads. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust's corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction). To participate in the Trust's Statutory & Mandatory training programme. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and out patients under your care. To demonstrate flexibility according to departmental requirements after discussion with the Clinical Lead.

About us

The clinical haematology services at Epsom and St Helier comprise an integrated service with joint Clinical Leads Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Caroline Ebdon.

At both sites the Haematology and Chemical Pathology laboratories have merged to form a Trust wide Blood Sciences department. Dr Caroline Ebdon, Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Helen Johnstone are joint heads of the Blood Sciences laboratory service across site. There is a Blood Sciences Service Manager who is directly responsible to the joint heads of department. He delegates managerial and scientific duties to other senior scientific staff, notably the scientific leads of the various laboratory sections.

The Department has improved its links with the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) in recent years, and RMH now provides funding for Pathology Reporting within the Centre for Molecular Pathology (HMDS).

Clinical Haematology outpatients, inpatient and day case activity is also managed by the Clinical Services Division.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will contribute to the clinical care of patients referred to the Haematology Department at both St Helier and Epsom General Hospitals.

Participate in 3 out-patient clinics per week.

The appointee may participate in the clinical rotas for the management of the inpatients at St Helier Hospital, but will not have their own dedicated beds for admission of patients at Epsom General Hospital.

The appointee will have an office with own desk and personal computer. They will have access to a microscope, including 2- and 6- headed microscopes for teaching purposes.

Dedicated secretarial support is provided by shared medical secretaries/patient pathway co-ordinators.

Responsible for advising all laboratory users, including general practitioners, on general haematology problems, as required.

This post also encompasses a Clinical Lead Role relevant to the candidates area of interest/expertise to which 1 PA is allocated.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview) Appropriate higher medical qualification MRCP or show evidence of equivalent qualification, FRCPath or equivalent

Desirable

BSc or MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical Experience

Essential

Broad expertise with high standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision Expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with haematological malignancies and general haematological disorders Knowledge of evidence-based practice Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for the specialty
