Job summary

We wish to appoint a researcher in population health, to conduct quantitative evaluations of physical activity interventions within our Physical Activity Research team at Born in Bradford (BiB), Bradford Institute for Health Research. BiB is an internationally acclaimed applied research programme which aims to improve health and wellbeing through the development and evaluation of interventions to promote health, and the application of research into practice ( Our mission is to promote a healthier, happier and fairer future for children, young people and their families in Bradford and beyond.

Our Physical Activity Research Team are working on a range of applied health projects which aim to develop, implement, and evaluate 'whole system' physical activity interventions such as the Bradford Sport England Local Delivery Pilot which is called Join Us Move Play (JUMP). Since 2018, Bradford's JU:MP programme has taken a whole systems approach to tackling inequalities in and access to physical activity among children aged 5-14. Working with families, communities, organisations, environment, policy and strategy, and at a local neighbourhood level using Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), the programme aligns with international evidence on investments that work (the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH), 2020) and the World Health Organisations Global Action plan.

Main duties of the job

The post will involve predominantly quantitative data collection, analysis and report writing, but will also work closely with our qualitative researchers. The successful candidate will also be involved in designing and delivering pilot studies and systematic reviews. An example of two projects include: the evaluation of the effectiveness of the JUMP whole system approach to tacking children and young people physical activity in a quasi-experimental control trial, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of greenspace developments at increasing physical activity within these spaces, using SOPARC audit data. Essential

Experience of organising and conducting applied research in community settings (for example in healthcare, social care or childcare/school settings) Experience of project management Experience of obtaining ethical and research approvals An academic track record of peer-reviewed publications Experience of working in collaborative research groups including NHS, local authority, schools, academics and other stakeholders Previous experience of developing and evaluating population health interventions Experience of developing and implementing quantitative research projects, including analysing complex information and writing up findings

Desirable

Previous experience of implementing co-production, citizen science activities in relation to health research Experience of developing and implementing qualitative research projects, including analysing complex information and writing up findings Experience of undertaking research in the field of physical activity Experience of collecting and analyzing physical activity data including accelerometry data Experience of patient and public involvement in research, particularly of working with diverse ethnic and social communities Previous experience of developing research proposals and funding applications

Knowledge of health inequalities, ethnicity and health, maternal and child health Knowledge of issues related to physical activity and health Knowledge of methods to develop, implement, and analyse complex interventions Knowledge of whole systems approaches to implementation and evaluation of health interventions Understanding of the Bradford public health context and of the links between natural environments and health and wellbeing

Qualifications

Essential

First degree in sport and exercise science, psychology, sociology, social science,, or other health related area with quantitative and qualitative training Post graduate diploma or Masters degree in health research, social research, public health, sustainability/environment or an allied subject.

Desirable

PhD in any of the following: sport and exercise science, health psychology, public health, applied health research, sustainability / environment or a health or environment related subject
