We are a team of people who love and look after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world. We create space for spirits to stir and be stirred.

We are currently seeking a qualified textile conservator to fill a maternity cover position for a period of nine months (with a possibility of extension) from July 2024. Joining the Textile Conservation Studio at Hampton Court Palace, you will play a key role in caring for the royal tapestries and furnishings, many of them on open display in their original setting, and Royal Ceremonial Dress collection, one of the finest dress collections in the world.

Reporting to the Textile Conservation Team Supervisor, the key responsibilities of this role will be carrying out hands-on conservation treatment, condition auditing on the textile collections on display and in store, and supporting all related activities for exhibition work. You will also regularly work as part of a wider multidisciplinary conservation team for condition audits and exhibition work, often onsite. Furthermore, you will be an enthusiastic communicator about our conservation efforts, engaging our diverse audiences.

About you 1

You should have completed a recognised textile conservation training programme or possess equivalent experience. You will have a passion for textile conservation and heritage and enjoy being part of a team. You’ll have a comprehensive knowledge of theory and techniques involved in textile conservation and have the ability to undertake complex hands-on treatment projects independently and the skills to maintain accurate detailed records. Although not essential, experience working on textiles collections within historic houses would be beneficial.

Based at Hampton Court Palace, there may be instances where you will need to travel to our other palaces. It is essential that you are at ease working at elevated heights. Historic Royal Palaces eagerly supports PACR accreditation.

Salary: £33,200 Per Annum
