Job summary

As a Senior Health Care Assistant (HCA) is to assist the nursing staff to implement the care plans of young people at Newbridge, and to undertake additional tasks or roles requested by Lead Nurse, Senior Staff Nurses or shift co-ordinators. Senior HCAs will take part in ensuring the smooth running of the shift, supervising more junior colleagues, and ensuring that all allocated tasks are performed. The nursing staff will decide the detailed care plans in conjunction with best practice (eg NICE guidelines), and senior HCAs will ensure that implementation of daily activities supports the care plans.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

Work within an awareness of NICE guidelines for the treatment of eating disorders

Be responsible for establishing therapeutic (healing) relationships with the patients

Undertake regular physical observations of young people, as directed by nursing staff, and feedback appropriately

Support and supervise patients at meal times

Contribute to group programmes provided for the patients at Newbridge House

Liaise with Staff Nurses and Occupational Therapists in terms of unit activity

Report any issue of concern to Staff Nurses

Work within the Health and Safety policies in accordance with Newbridge House guidelines

Assist Occupational therapists and Assistant psychologists to deliver therapies, as time permits, and with agreement of nursing staff

Be responsible for ensuring documentation eg observation sheets, medical and patient-held notes are accurately completed and filed

Professional

Act as role model for HCA peers, demonstrating professional approach to duties with young people

Represent Newbridge in a professional manner, when interacting with families and visiting professionals

Operate within assessed competence, as per Newbridge induction

Maintain professional boundaries with young people at all times

Participate in organising and managing HCA meetings

Provide support to the Staff Nurses

Provide support and advice to HCA colleagues

Advise Senior Staff nurses and shift co-ordinators of any difficulties arising during shift eg security concerns

Qualifications

Essential

Can demonstrate clear evidence of continued professional development. Understanding of MHA and Children Act. Understanding of NICE guidelines for the treatment of eating disorders. Understanding of Safeguarding principles

NVQ level 3 (or equivalent)
