Job overview

To be part of a team of clinical scientists and technicians supporting and maintaining specialist clinical and dental equipment at all sites within the Barts & The London NHS Trust on rotational basis and to various NHS and private healthcare organisations with whom Service Level Agreements or contracts exist.

This is a fixed term 9 months contract which covers temporary absence of an engineer based at Barts Hospital..

The postholder will be required to accept a 7-day working week system.

As part of your career development you will be offered in-house and formal manufacturers’ training courses.

Ideally you will be on the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists and will be qualified to BEng/BSc in Engineering of Physical Science or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience. You should have extensive technical experience in the support maintenance and management of medical equipment.

Main duties of the job

The Postholder will carry out scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, non-routine repair, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical equipment. The Postholder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability.

The postholder is required to provide cover for the Equipment Library Service.

The Postholder liaises with clinical and technical staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas and working with manufacturers, as appropriate.

Essential criteria

•BEng / BSc in Engineering or Physical Science or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience. •Evidence of regular participation in relevant technical training courses and seminars

Desirable criteria

•Working towards Registered Clinical Technologist status.

Experience

Essential criteria

•Experience in the maintenance and performance checking of clinical equipment •Practical experience of using a range of test & measuring equipment and of applying electronic engineering workshop practices and techniques. •Experience of working in a clinical environment, needing to minimise down time, whilst taking account of patient safety, dignity and infection prevention.

Desirable criteria

•Experience of working within a Quality Management System.

•Advanced electronic engineering skills including the use of test & measuring equipment, handling and assembly of components and boards, fault finding and diagnosis, use of technical manuals and circuit diagrams. •Intermediate mechanical engineering skills including use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings. •Ability to recognise a wide range of hazards (radiation, high voltages, large mechanical loads, chemical and biological contamination), to risk assess and maintain safe working practices and environments. •Ability to use MS Windows and Office (Excel, Word, Outlook etc); to manage files and set up documents and spreadsheets. •Ability to use a computerised equipment management database system. •Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills – to manage own work area and work load. •Good written and verbal communication skills. •Good customer relations and interpersonal skills. Able to negotiate with patients, nursing, clinical, scientific, and management staff on issues relating to management of specific medical equipment. •Able to provide advice, instruction and training to patients and small groups of clinical and technical staff on areas relating to areas of own responsibility of work. •Flexibility and ability to adapt to continuously improving systems of working. •Ability to supervise and support junior staff and trainees.
