Job summary

An opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology team to meet activity demands across all areas of the service. You will therefore be expected to deliver a level of General Ophthalmology with some focused sub-speciality time in surgical cornea. The job plan is yet to be confirmed but will require some Direct Clinical Care sessions at the Royal Derby Hospital site and peripheral site.

Main duties of the job

Ophthalmology is predominantly based at the Royal Derby Hospital, but with some sessions delivered at sister sites. The appointment is subject to the National Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors (2021), which may be amended by collective agreement from time to time.

Applicants must hold MBBS or an equivalent medical qualification together with the Diploma in Ophthalmology or a higher qualification.

Full Registration with the GMC and a licence to practice at time of application is essential.

We see on average 4810 OP appointments a day. We are the 4th busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic outpatients department in England - an average of 2077 per week. An average of 1115 patients are seen in A&Es across our network every day - 3rd largest in the country. Our hospitals admit an average of 195 emergency patients daily. Last year we undertook almost 33,700 planned surgical operations in our 57 operating theatres. We are one of only 7 Trusts nationally with more than 50 operating theatres. We carry out more than 140 elective procedures each working day. Job responsibilities

This is not a training post but appointed doctors will be supported to achieve the competencies and requirements for specialty registration through CESR route. They can approach the department to discuss their needs in advance.

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of application Completion of 4 years full time post graduate training (or equivalent gained on part time or flexible basis at least two of which will be in a speciality training programme in Ophthalmology or as a fixed term speciality trainee in ophthalmology or equivalent experience and competencies

Ophthalmology experience at middle grade level

Clinical Knowledge and skills

Essential

Qualified and experience cataract surgeon (200 independent and unsupervised phacoemulsification and lens implantations carried out plus 200 cases assisted).

Clinical Governace/improving quality of patient care

Essential

Evidence of interest and experience in teaching junior doctors and medical students. Evidence of active participation in audit

Desirable

Evidence of relevant academic research achievements relevant to Ophthalmology
