Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our friendly and dedicated team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. The post holder will be supporting and assisting the Occupational Therapy Team with delivery of patient care within the setting.

The role will include planning and facilitating therapeutic assessments within an inpatient setting to support with facilitating safe discharges from hospital, as directed by a Qualified Occupational Therapist .

The successful post-holder will need to have a passion for working within a healthcare setting, as well as, have a high level of adaptable communication skills, be compassionate, respectful and value individual patient needs.

Main duties of the job

You will support and assist the Qualified Occupational Therapists and the wider Team with the delivery Patient Care to those having a range of Orthopaedic Surgery and conditions.

The Post holder will have an opportunity to plan and facilitate assessments and interventions according to patient needs within an inpatient setting to support within the framework set by the Qualified Occupational Therapist.

If you do not hold a QCF/NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, equivalent qualification, or the Care Certificate the post holder will be supported to complete the Care Certificate.

Job responsibilities

Purpose of post

To assist the Occupational Therapists in providing assessment and treatment of orthopaedic patients and provision of information and advice to patients and carers. To contribute to the smooth and efficient day to day running of the Occupational Therapy Department by ensuring the department is tidy and maintained to required standards of health and safety and infection control. To monitor stock levels of materials and equipment and ensure these are maintained to the required levels. To assist in the delivery of the objectives of the Occupational Therapy Services.

Specific Responsibilities

Communication

To promote good working relationships with all disciplines working in the Trust. To attend Occupational Therapy staff meetings and other service related meetings as required. To maintain any clinical interventions in relevant medical records in accordance with localpolicies and Occupational Therapy specifications. To liaise with and feedback to Occupational Therapists and other occupational therapy assistants as appropriate. Assist in equal sharing of workloads and provide limited administrative support.

Clinical

Gain and maintain knowledge and skills based around Occupational Therapy Clinical Work including a range of therapy interventions and equipment. Assist Occupational Therapists in completing clinical interventions in response to patient needs as required. This may include teaching and supervision of patients (and their family/carers) on how to use equipment for activities of daily living and mobility equipment, as safely and independently as possible, and reinforcing patient education and advice given by a qualified therapist. To assist with group education sessions and screening of patients function hip classes. To issue equipment as prescribed by the occupational therapist and explain safe use and care of equipment to patients and carers. To prepare and tidy therapeutic assessment and treatment areas ready for treatment sessions. Be responsible for checking that the condition of equipment allows for safe use before supplying to patients. To be responsible for maintenance of equipment returned to OT department and return of equipment.

Planning and Organisational Skills

To maintain the correct level of supplies and stores in the Occupational Therapy Department. To clean and maintain equipment (such as wheelchairs) according to Trust decontamination guidelines. To assist the Occupational Therapy Team Leader (Orthopaedic Directorate) in ensuring that all occupational therapy equipment in the department is stored safely and maintained in safe working order. To record departmental statistics and equipment records as required by the Occupational Therapy Team Leader (Orthopaedics). Be Aware of and adhere to OUH and NHS Health and Safety and Human Resource Policies. Assist in maintaining a safe and tidy Occupational Therapy Department.

Service and Personal Development

To participate in regular supervision sessions setting personal and service objectives identified through the annual Personal Development Plan process including the maintenance of a personal development portfolio. To attend Occupational Therapy In-Service Training and other support worker related courses as appropriate/inline with personal development plan. To be involved in the induction and orientation programmes of new Occupational Therapy staff and students to the Occupational Therapy Department. To work towards and achieve competencies required for the Band 3 level such as Knowledge and Service Framework Outline and the Care Certificate.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

oGood written/spoken English.

Desirable

oGood General Education (to GCSE standard or equivalent) including maths and English. oAchieved or working towards relevant HNC, NVQ LEVEL 3 or equivalent experience oSome knowledge of anatomy, physiology, or human biology.

Experience

Essential

oCommunicating with the general public. oInterest in working with and managing equipment systems.

Desirable

oPrevious relevant clinical work in a health-care setting. oExperience of working with people with musculoskeletal conditions/ knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions.
