Trainee Children's Wellbeing Practitioner

Eastleigh, United Kingdom Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for you to train and work in a role that makes a positive impact in young people's lives within an innovative and pioneering CAMHS service.

The post provides the opportunity to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Brief Evidence-Based Interventions for Children and Young People with Common Mental Health Problems , that is being run in collaboration with the University of Reading.

Following completion of this course, you will be a qualified Children's Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) .

As a Trainee CWP, we'll give you the opportunity to make a real difference as you learn how to provide treatments and interventions that help young people overcome their mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

Trainees will work within our CAMHS service in Hampshire delivering evidence-based interventions whilst undertaking a programme of study at the University of Reading. Ongoing employment and band progression will be dependent on successful completion of the university course and availability of qualified vacancies.

Applicants must be able and willing to travel across Hampshire and to Reading University. Due to the nature of the role and ongoing expectations in relation to service delivery, car drivers are highly preferable.

Main duties of the job

As well as taking part in a dedicated training programme at the University of Reading, the remainder of your week will be spent working in our committed and innovative CAMHS service. By the end of your training, you'll have the skills, as well as the confidence, to provide a range of cognitive behavioural informed interventions to help young people improve their well-being and overcome their common mental health problems.

On a day--to--day basis, your work will include accepting referrals via agreed protocols and supporting those in the self--management of their recovery. You will also provide telephone/online--based assessments and treatments, conduct group workshops and face to face assessments, support parents and young people through guided self--help and contribute to the wider delivery of our services in the community.

The team you will be part of is currently made up of qualified Children Wellbeing Practitioners and Senior Wellbeing Practitioners delivering Low Intensity (LI) interventions and Whole Community Approach (WCA) work within GP surgeries/Primary Care Networks (PCNs). This team forms part of the Early Help provision within across Hampshire so will be working closely with the existing Primary Mental Health Workers and Mental Health Support Teams in Schools as well as the Specialist Locality Based Community CAMHS Teams.

About us

Southern Health is one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK, specialising in mental health and learning disabilities, as well as offering physical health community-based services.

With a workforce of more than 7000 and a footprint that spans more than 200 sites across Hampshire, we're committed to providing the best possible healthcare, reaching a range of diverse communities, whilst placing patients and staff at the forefront of all our endeavours.

We are currently working closely with other NHS Trusts to combine all our collective community, mental health, and learning disability services, with the plan to create a new larger, more integrated and accessible organisation.

The transformation will happen in stages; Hampshire CAMHS, part of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust joined Southern Health in February 2024, with Isle of Wight NHS Trust mental health and community services transitioning across in May 2024. The final combination of Southern Health and Solent NHS Trust services is expected in late 2024, when our new organisation, to be known as Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will be formed.

Our new Trust will continue to cater to the unique needs of different communities, making healthcare across the county more accessible, as well as offering staff more opportunities for career development, training and partnership working.

Join us as we embark on this exciting journey to shape the future of healthcare in Hampshire.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We are looking for very able graduates in psychology or graduates from a range of other disciplines who are genuinely interested in helping young people, and possess a deep level of empathy, understanding and patience. You will need outstanding telephone and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work well in a team. You will be prepared to study for a postgraduate qualification, and be inspired by the transformation agenda for children and young people's mental health services. (Reading University also offers a level 6 graduate diploma programme for those that do not have a degree).

In return, you'll enjoy the scope and support to enhance your own life and career too, as you gain the experience and training you need to progress in your career with us.

Beyond the professional advantages of this role, you will have the benefit of living and working in an attractive part of the country with opportunities throughout Hampshire.

Applicants for these posts do not require a recognised professional qualification in mental health, although previous training/experience in mental health or working with children and young people is an advantage and you will be working towards registration / accreditation.
