Cambridge, United Kingdom Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute Full time

We are seeking a talented Bioinformatician to join the Spatial Profiling and Annotation Centre of Excellence (SPACE), led by Prof. Gregory Hannon and Dr. Dario Bressan, at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, University of Cambridge. This role involves analysing and integrating single-cell and spatial transcriptomic and proteomic data across various cancer types, with the goal to understand how a tumour’s spatial organization influences its progression, dissemination, and response to therapy.

The SPACE centre of excellence is a multidisciplinary group focused on improving spatial molecular profiling technologies (spatial proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics) and applying them to big problems in cancer biology and beyond, through large collaborations within and outside of Cambridge. It includes most available spatial omics technologies under one roof, as well as a world class data processing centre and a dedicated staff including biologists, technologists and bioinformaticians. The centre was developed following a successful cancer grand challenge project (IMAXT). Some of the projects currently carried out in the centre include the development of a predictor for triple-negative breast cancer response to therapy, work on the impact of ovarian cancer tumour heterogeneity on its metastatic dissemination, and a project focused on investigating low-to-high grade transition in gliomas.

The Hannon group is renowned for its contributions to RNA biology and cancer research, consistently developing innovative tools to tackle cutting-edge questions. The group has established a robust pipeline for 3D spatial characterization of tumours and tissues, amassing unique imaging data paired with spatially and temporally resolved single-cell transcriptomics and proteomics. You will play a key role in analysing and interpreting this data, generating hypotheses to be tested using animal models and ex-vivo systems.

The ideal candidate will possess strong programming skills, a solid foundation in standard bioinformatics analysis, and basic statistical knowledge. Previous experience in cancer data analysis, machine learning, and exposure to diverse imaging modalities will be advantageous. The role offers training from senior bioinformaticians within the group as needed. Depending on skills and interests, the role may also involve statistical analysis of sequencing data, development of data analysis pipelines and methodologies, or the creation of machine learning methods to integrate various data types.
You will be integrated into the group’s research activities, contributing your own ideas and undertaking independent research within the group’s general research area. Collaboration is key, and you will work closely with wet-lab scientists producing data, other bioinformaticians within the group, and core facility scientists and bioinformaticians within the institute.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
