Hull, United Kingdom The Church of England Full time
Associate Vicar of the Benefice of Derringham Bank
This is an exciting time in the life of The Ascension and St Thomas’ in the benefice of Derringham Bank, Hull. Our Church is excited about what God is doing amongst us and what our future holds. A new vicar was licensed in January 2024 with the purpose of working with the existing church family and a team moving from St Michael Le Belfrey, York (a charismatic, evangelical church) to do a Church Plant Revitalisation, and work towards becoming a Resourcing Church.
We are seeking an Associate Vicar to help us discover God’s vision for how we can live Christ’s story in our communities. Alongside usual clergy duties in collaboration with the Vicar, the Associate Vicar will have a particular focus on mission and discipleship among children, young people and families and will oversee the development of engagement with, and provision for children and families at the Sunday morning service. Prayer is important to us and we will pray for you.
You will find us West of the vibrant city of Hull. We are excited about our future and finding the person God is calling to join our team and journey forward into the plans we know he has for us.
  1. To work with the PCCs and congregations to help set a vision for the parishes and to lead the churches effectively and prayerfully with regard to its implementation.
  2. To cherish diversity in worship embracing the breadth of worship within the churches and making provision for the needs of all ages.
  3. To lead the churches in evangelism and outreach.
  4. To teach the bible with application, nurturing church members in their discipleship.
  5. To develop pastoral care across the parishes, having an understanding and appreciation of the context.
  6. To deepen the life of the churches, identifying how resources and gifts can be shared.
  7. To work with other denominations within the parishes and contribute actively to the life of the deanery.
We are looking for an Associate Vicar who will:
  • Envision us for church planting and revitalisation.
  • Enable and equip us to reach families and younger generations.
  • Line manage our Youth and Community Pioneer as they set up a Youth and Community Centre
  • Help us to reach those we currently do not.
  • Teach the Bible well and make a priority of growing disciples.
  • Embrace the variety of worship across our churches and diverse community.
  • Embrace collaborative ministry.
The Diocese of York The Diocese of York, led and guided by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, takes in much of North and East Yorkshire. As the largest diocese in England, geographically, the area is very diverse, featuring a multitude of needs and opportunities. This includes the bustling urban centres of York, Hull and Middlesbrough, the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and the incomparable Yorkshire Coast; as well as areas of deprivation in some of our urban and smaller rural and coastal communities.
Our mission and ministry relies on thousands of people - lay and ordained, volunteer and paid. Our diocesan teams provide a wide range of support services to our mission and ministry, including lifelong learning for ministry, the care of church buildings, and safeguarding. Together, we are striving to be a people who are ‘Living Christ’s Story’. We want to be a simpler, bolder, humbler church which in its diversity reflects the communities it serves. We are bringing renewed focus and fresh energy to achieving our aims:
  • Becoming more like Christ
  • Reaching those we currently don't
  • Growing in discipleship, influence and numbers
  • Transforming our finances and structures
Our approach is aligned with a commitment to the best of our parochial inheritance and to the poorest communities, and to the financial realities we face.
Under current immigration rules, it is not generally possible for us to appoint clergy who are not already eligible to work in the UK.
Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS disclosure.
