Wakefield, United Kingdom Wakefield Council Full time

Would you like to make a difference to the education of visually impaired children? Would you like to be part of their journey as they learn, develop their independence and prepare for adulthood?

The Visual Impairment (VI) team (part of WISENDSS) provides support to children with vision impairments and multi-sensory impairments from birth to secondary school age and beyond, including those children with complex needs.

We are looking to appoint an experienced individual to provide excellent support to children and young people with a visual or multi-sensory impairment.

The VI Team is a forward-thinking service of specialist teachers and support staff who work across a variety of settings in the Wakefield District, to enhance inclusive education for children and young people with a sensory impairment. The team provides support in the home and in a range of educational settings.

We are looking for a motivated professional to support the work of the team, particularly in ensuring those children with the most complex needs receive the appropriate support and teaching that will enable them to achieve their full potential. If appointed you will work in partnership with schools, professionals and other agencies, to support children with a visual impairment and their families to participate fully in all aspects of society. You will need to be an experienced, energetic, enthusiastic person who is able to work autonomously but who also enjoys working as part of a team and has excellent practice. You will support and develop work with other learning support officers, together with advisory teachers, to ensure appropriate advice and strategies, risk management and inclusion is facilitated. You will manage your own caseload and some of our work with parents.

You will have experience of working as a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant in a school setting, or you will have substantial experience of working with children with special educational needs, particularly those with a vision impairment. You must also have a willingness to work with computers and assistive technology.

So, if you have an excellent work ethic and you believe you fulfil the criteria we would love to hear from you. For further information please email Sam Cariss (VI Team Lead) -

This post is term-time only.
