CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN

NHS HIGHLAND

LORN & ISLANDS HOSPITAL, OBAN

PERMANENT FULL TIME POST – 10 PA’s per week (2 EPAs available)

per annum

Flexible Contract available

Do you ever dream of driving to work on quiet roads alongside a beautiful Scottish sea loch, parking without stress at the hospital, to be greeted by smiling staff for whom compassion and pride in their work is still important? How would it feel to be part of a community with patients who genuinely appreciate your service and your skills? Would you like the bonus of working in one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, a centre for holidays and outdoor pursuits of all kinds, and only 2 hours from Glasgow International Airport?

If this sounds refreshing then why not consider joining us as a Consultant Physician here at the Lorn and Islands Rural General Hospital in Oban on the west coast of Scotland.

We have a vision for Lorn and Islands Hospital Department of Medicine, and we have already started on that journey; we are looking for a Consultant Physician with excellent general medical skills and experience (a special interest relevant to the department would also be welcomed) to continue this; there is the opportunity to help shape the medical service in this Rural General Hospital. This is a Consultant Physician led service, centred on high quality health care but supporting a great work life balance. When you come to work you will deliver high quality health care to the local population, but you will not have people queueing in ambulances or waiting in corridors. Working with a small dedicated team of experienced Consultants and junior doctors, and fantastic nurses and allied health care workers in a hospital that serves the population of north Argyll, with onsite radiologists and lab services, you will see your patient from one end of their hospital journey to the other. This continuity is often difficult to achieve in larger hospitals and you will have the satisfaction that you have made a real difference to the patients’ care and experience.

Rural Emergency Physicians (doctors with either a CCT in Accident & Emergency or on the GP register) have recently been introduced into the Accident & Emergency department: they provide senior clinical expertise and decision making at the front door and ensure smooth patient flow and management, whilst supporting the training and supervision of the junior doctors. Consultant Physicians and Surgeons provide additional support as required. Sick patients can be transferred out either by road ambulance or an excellent helicopter retrieval service (ScotSTAR).

Lorn & Islands Hospital is located on the southern outskirts of Oban and forms a hub for both acute and community services within the area. Purpose built in 1995, the Hospital houses a full range of facilities expected in a rural general hospital including a full 24-hour medical, surgical, anaesthetic (which includes assistance with unwell patients) and radiology service. The consultants also provide outpatient clinics to community hospitals throughout Argyll. Tertiary and specialised secondary care referral links are well established to, mainly, hospitals in Glasgow.

This vacancy is offered on the basis of 10 Programmed Activities per week. Up to 2 additional PAs may be available by negotiation and part time applications will also be considered – we are open to non standard work patterns. Consultant contracts have been annualised - which allows you the peace of mind that you will get appropriate time off - in another rural general hospital in NHS Highland, and we are committed to achieving it in Oban.

The area is of one of outstanding natural beauty. The town of Oban is a tourist and commercial centre for the West of Scotland and the Isles. The port town has ferry links to the islands of Mull, Iona, Islay, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and Lismore. There is plenty of opportunity for enjoying leisure pursuits including yachting, canoeing, walking, climbing, cycling and fishing. There is a strong culture of traditional music and dance in Argyll. It’s a great place to bring up a family with good local schools and reasonable property prices.

Oban provides the advantage of a high quality of life in a rural setting with access to the main centres of Inverness, Glasgow, Stirling and Perth all within 2.5 hours travel time.

Within this role we can offer a Global Citizens contract for a period of 3yrs. The job can offer 10 weeks* (paid) each year which will be captured in your job plan dedicated to contributing to global health work either in a partner country, or working in Scotland to support global health activity with partners. Work could be online teaching, engagement with global and national policy makers in partner countries to support development, strengthening or evaluation of services. You will have the support of the Global Health Academy based in Edinburgh, which can identify projects for you to join overseas and can assist in travel and visa arrangements for self-directed projects. Example programme countries include Malawi, Zambia and Rwanda. (*This excludes annual leave and study leave – which could be added to this time.)

Applicants are encouraged to visit the hospital and surrounding area.
