  • The Risk Assessment Operations Team (RAOs) is seeking acandidate to support the Plant Diagnostic Lab efforts towardstargeted sampling strategies and building isolate collections tofacilitate tracking economically important diseases and informingdecisions on product placement.
  • The candidate will work alongside Scientists to identifyand diagnose suspected diseases of plant samples using anycombination of the following methods and techniques: platingspecimens in axenic culture microscopy work slide wet mountswholeplant symptom assessment keying reference materials/literatureand molecular identification tools.
  • Moreover the candidate must be able to workindependently and across teams demonstrate a high level ofattention to detail and provide written and digital reports ofdiagnoses in a timely manner.
  • Lastly it is expected that the candidate supportsinoculum lab operations including production standardizationoptimization and researchrelated activities.
  • The candidate must have excellentsterile technique and an understanding of good manufacturingpractices.
POSITION DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsibilities may include butare not limited to any of the following:
  • Ability to morphologically identify plantpathogens & other microorganisms
  • Ability to assess phenotypic symptomsassociated with different plant diseases or abiotic stressors
  • Manipulating andmanaging a diverse collection of fungal bacterial & viralpathogens
  • Utilizingboth light and dissecting microscopes
  • Isolating & quantifying DNA and/or RNA
  • Molecularidentification of organisms (using qPCR PCR or targeted sequencing)
  • Preparation ofdifferent substrates or growth mediums for pathogen growth
  • Supporting theinoculum production & controlled environment labs with tasks asneeded
  • Support inpackaging and shipping procedures while remaining compliant
  • On occasion plantmaintain and inoculate plants as well as collect tissue samples
  • Keep good datarecords and ensure proper labeling
  • Maintain and follow all health safety andenvironmental procedures
  • Maintain a clean work & lab space regularly
  • Disposal ofregulated and nonregulated waste regularly in both lab andcontrolled environment spaces
  • On occasion traveling & working at field sites maybe required
  • Able tohandle frequent shifting of duties
  • Occasionally assist Scientists with tasksrelated to different projects
Requirements:
  • Punctuality is a must
  • Experience in mycology (strongpreference) and/or microbiology
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook Word Excel andPowerPoint)
  • Able towork in a fastpaced environment and with a dynamic team
  • Trustworthy ofworking independently and within a team
  • Maintaining sterile technique is a must
  • Good attention todetail and capable of troubleshooting
  • Capable of following standard operatingprocedures and proper labeling
  • Comfortable working in a growth chamber environment orfield setting occasionally
  • Able to lift 50 lbs or greater on occasion
  • Good verbal and writtencommunication skills
  • Comfortable with a variety of repetitive tasks

  • Minimum education required bachelors degreein biology ecology life sciences forestry or microbiology
