Main duties of the job

The Highly Specialist Clinical Practitioner Role provides a comprehensive, specialist, trauma-informed therapeutic service to young people and prison staff at HMYOI Feltham. The post involves having a key role in the delivery of the SECURE STAIRS Integrated Care framework and sits as part of our Health & Wellbeing (CAMHS) team. This will involve providing clinical input to a dedicated landing to support the trauma informed integrated care framework, working alongside the Custodial Manager, developing good working relationships with staff and young people and being a visible presence on the landings. This will include supporting staff to develop skills in reflective practice and understanding of key theories, such as trauma-informed care and adolescent development.

The role will also involve the assessment of the mental health and psychological needs of young people and delivery of relevant group and 1-1 interventions, akin to that delivered within CAMH services in the community. This will include providing advice and consultation on young people's mental health to other clinical and non-clinical members of the wider MDT within the YOI.

The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills; and a proven ability to make evidence-based, informed decisions within a complex, rapidly changing and demanding environment.

Job responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive, specialist therapeutic service to young people at HMYOI Feltham. To provide specialist mental health and psychological assessment and therapy (as appropriate to professional training) as well as offering advice and consultation on young peoples care to other members of the core team on a given landing or unit. To coordinate and support the core support team in the process of multi-disciplinary collaborative formulation. To provide reflective practice, training and support to custodial colleagues in their day-to-day management of young people in the YOI. To offer therapeutic work to families of young people in the YOI. To develop and facilitate a range of therapeutic groups including weekly community meetings. To supervise and oversee the work of assistant practitioners, students and graduate therapists/psychologists. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the services policies and procedures. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the Health & Justice Service Line. To provide clinical supervision to other members of the team or custodial service when appropriate, including in the event of a serious or significant incident. To offer training to prison staff and other professional colleagues around therapeutic skills, adolescent mental health and related issues.

Working Environment

The post holder will work primarily in the Young Offenders Institution, at Feltham, but will also participate in home visits, external handovers, CPAs and other meetings off site.

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

oDegree in Psychology or a related field, accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) or Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or equivalent professional body. oFor psychology candidates; Doctoral level training in clinical, forensic or counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, equivalent to that accredited by the BPS OR oA recognised professional post-graduate qualification in Systemic Therapy, Family Therapy, Arts Therapies, Psychotherapy or relevant core mental health professional therapeutic training. oHCPC Registered oHCPC/UKCP registration or similar bodies

Desirable

oPre- or Post-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology oFurther training in a specific trauma therapy EMDR, NET, TF-CBT oFamily therapy qualification / training oFurther training in reflective practice oFurther training in forensic mental health or forensic psychology

Experience

Essential

oExperience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings oExperience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. oExperience of representing psychology or a given therapeutic discipline within the context of multi-disciplinary care oExperience/understanding of working with adolescents/young people

oExperience of teaching and training oExperience of working within a secure setting, prison or hospital. oExperience working with adolescents with complex needs. oExperience of clinical work in the field of harmful sexual behaviour or sexual health. oExperience of running reflective practice or staff groups. oExperience of offering clinical supervision.
