Main duties of the job

The Named Nurse will act as a clinical expert andprofessional resource to all practitioners within the Trust and will beresponsible for providing lead support to staff who are dealing with orsupervising cases of actual and suspected child abuse.

The post holder will beresponsible for undertaking the Trusts internal management reviews where thereis a statutory responsibility to participate in a Safeguarding Practice Reviewsand will contribute to ensuring that the Trust meets its statutory responsibilitiesin relation to Section 11 of The Children Act 2004. The development ofcollaborative working in relation to safeguarding children and leading theVulnerable Children Agenda whilst contributing to the multi-agency work andaction plans to support the agenda is an integral part of this Role.

This post is a senior role sitting within the corporatenursing team at Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust and as such the post holderwill be expected to lead and contribute to a range of developments that enhancenursing and midwifery practice.

The role will work in partnership with internal and external partners, including attendance at the children partnership board meetings.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

To actively promote andmaintain effective communication and information sharing strategies in relationto safeguarding children and young people. To support and empowerpractitioners within the Trust to identify safeguarding children issues,ultimately enabling them to manage concerns appropriately. To work in partnership withlead clinicians, heads of service and matrons to ensure that frontline staffare aware of their responsibilities to ensure that children are effectivelysafeguarded. The post holder will beresponsible for contributing to the Trusts internal management reviews inresponse to requests from the Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships where achild dies or sustains a serious injury thought to be as a result of abuse orneglect; and will ensure that the reports are submitted for sign off by theDirector of Nursing and Quality prior to submission to the Local SafeguardingChildren Partnership. To have a sound knowledgeof the complex issues related to safeguarding children and young people whichwill include domestic abuse, parental mental health and drug and substancemisuse. Demonstrate excellentcommunication skills in written, verbal and presentation skills within avariety of forums. To demonstrate the abilityto manage an unpredictable, challenging and changing workload.

Leadership

Act as an innovative,enthusiastic role model providing leadership, in depth specialist clinicalknowledge, guidance and advice to staff on operational and professional issuesin relation to safeguarding children, safeguarding supervision and domestic abuse,promoting an open, honest and transparent culture. Act as a resource forhealth care professionals by being visible, available, and accessible (whenpossible not out of hours) for support and advice in relation to themanagement of safeguarding and domestic abuse issues. Undertake safeguardingsupervision of Midwives, Nurses and other colleagues and facilitatesafeguarding supervision sessions on an individual or group basis. Contribute to thepopulation of the Safeguarding Supervision Database. Reflect, analyse and takeany identified action required in respect of complex child protection cases toensure that children are safeguarded. Provide a professional linkfor other practitioners and actively promote joined up multi agency working. Lead consultations on anddevelop strategies for delivering effective care within a changing environmentthat improves the quality of care and health outcomes for vulnerable families. To have an awareness of andsupport the development of the child death review process within the localHealth Economy. To have a detailedunderstanding of Government agendas in relation to safeguarding children anddomestic abuse and alert the Trust to any issues in their implementation. Ensure systems are in placefor risk assessment and harm minimisation including promoting fair & justculture in order that near misses and incidents are reported. Take the lead ininvestigation of incidents / complaints in relation to safeguarding childrenissues when required. Liaise with the NamedProfessionals for Safeguarding Adults and Lead for Learning disabilitiesregarding interfaces with vulnerable adults domestic abuse/Learningdisabilities issues and incidents. Work with NamedProfessional for Safeguarding Adults to jointly lead the work on DomesticHomicide Reviews. Lead on areas identified inconjunction with Trust Objectives and Head of Safeguarding requirements. Demonstrate clinicalleadership and challenge speciality and directorate boundaries to ensure thatchildren and young people are effectively safeguarded throughout theorganisation. Take a lead on policywriting and review ensuring that safeguarding is explicit in appropriatepolicies. To be aware of anddemonstrate an ability to manage the emotional impact that individual cases ofchild abuse and neglect may have on practitioners through the provision ofsupport and safeguarding supervision. Experience

Essential

Experience of multi disciplinary working to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults. Experience of critically analysing practice in order to improve outcomes for children, young people and vulnerable adults. Experience of the safeguarding supervision process. Experience in the utilisation of Microsoft packages to develop training materials and of facilitating training events. Experience of engagement in audit activities and preparation of report findings. Experience of complex and vulnerable children agenda.

Desirable

Experience of facilitating training events. Experience of working in a range of healthcare settings acute / community / prison. Advanced keyboard skills.

Qualifications

Essential

Part 1 or Part 3 NMC Registered practitioner with extensive experience. Significant experience in safeguarding. Evidence of ongoing professional development at degree level. Evidence of competency in teaching and assessing. Evidence of accredited safeguarding supervision training.

Desirable

First level degree or evidence of working towards attainment. Training qualification.

Knowledge

Essential

Detailed understanding of inter-agency safeguarding procedures. In depth understanding of the statutory responsibilities to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults. An awareness of the importance of effective interagency collaboration. A broad awareness of risk indicators, which may have a detrimental impact on the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
