Healthcare Assistants - Expression of Interest

West Cornwall, United Kingdom

Who are we?

Marie Curie is one of the UK’s most loved charities and the leader in end-of-life care and support. We’re fighting for a better end of life for all because we believe that every day of your life matters – from the first to the last.

You may have seen our recent TV advert

Beautiful, wild and remote, West Cornwall is not only a popular family destination but a place of tucked-away communities, with a thriving arts and culture scene and stunning prehistoric landscapes. From the golden sands of St Ives Bay, the storm-washed cliffs of Land's End, to the sub-tropical gardens of Penzance or the ancient lands of West Penwith, it’s a truly vibrant region to work in.

The opportunity

At Marie Curie we care about you and your career, and we seek to provide opportunities to ensure our employees are constantly learning new things and feeling challenged in their role.

As a result, we would like to stay connected with you via this expression of interest for any Healthcare Assistant vacancies in our West Cornwall region now and over the next 6 months.

Our Healthcare Assistants work as part of a multidisciplinary and multiagency team providing holistic, person-centred, end-of-life care to patients and those important to them, undertaking a broad range of care activities as delegated by a Registered Nurse through a documented plan of care.

As well as a week-long induction, including an introduction to palliative care, you will also be assigned a ‘Buddy’ for the first six months in role. You can also study a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Care at Truro and Penwith College. This is a fantastic opportunity to ‘learn while you earn’ with us

How will I make a difference?

You'll be required to carry out a range of care duties including helping patients meet their hygiene needs, monitoring symptoms, assisting with medications, keeping detailed records and emotional support to the patient and their families/most important people. No day is the same, but it will include such purposeful work as:

Nurturing compassionate person-centred relationships and effective communication. Holding honest, well-informed conversations focused on what matters to the person and those important to them.  Holistic assessment, care planning and supporting with care needs. Symptom management, maintaining comfort and wellbeing at the end of life. Supporting people to develop an advanced care planning statement that makes their choices and wishes clear to others. Supporting significant others to plan for and cope with loss, grief and bereavement. Striving for excellence through quality improvement, practice development and innovation.

Benefits you’ll LOVE

A meaningful career that enables you to make a difference in people’s lives when they need and appreciate it the most. Time to provide dedicated care to patients and their families / most important people in their preferred setting. Access to flexible working opportunities including full and part-time options and a competitive range of benefits and support. Continued access to NHS Pension Scheme or Marie Curie group pension scheme. Season ticket loan. Loan schemes for bikes; computers and satellite navigation systems. Continuous development. Industry-leading training programmes. Employee Assistance Programme.  Annual Leave Entitlement will take into account previous years of service under Agenda for Change terms and conditions. Generous enhancements 41% x your basic salary per hour paid for Saturdays & weekday night duty (8pm to 6am)  83% x your basic salary per hour paid for Sundays and Public Bank Holidays

As well as our fantastic benefits you will also get to partner with and learn from colleagues who are dedicated to delivering exceptional experiences in palliative care. Marie Curie is at the forefront of innovations in palliative care, and you will have the opportunity to thrive in a career in this area, working with supportive and enthusiastic teams and colleagues.

What do I need?

Previous experience in a similar care role and a real interest in offering exceptional end of life care. Excellent communication skills with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with a diverse range of people. The willingness to work alone overnight – after initial training. Good IT skills with an openness to learning our systems and processes. A clean driving licence and use of a private car. Though you will have access to a ‘pool’ car for daytime shifts. Valid right to work in the UK is essential.
