Job summary

The postholder will provide clinical and administrative support within the Diabetic Eye Screening Service.

In a community and hospital based clinical setting the postholder will prepare service users for retinal imaging, recording relevant medical and ocular histories, carrying out a visual acuity test and instilling mydriatic eye drops.

Administrative support will be office based and consist of telephone and data entry work to support the booking and engagement varied and exciting new role will involve flexible working including some Saturdays and Evenings.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

o To undertake and complete the required units of the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners (Diabetic Eye).o To work alongside the Retinal Screener-Graders to ensure the smooth and efficient running of screening To record relevant medical and ophthalmic histories during face-to-face patient To carry out visual acuity testing and administer prescribed eye drops to patients in accordance with Trust policy and national guidelines.

Administration Duties

o Deal with telephone and face-to-face enquires and appointment bookings in a professional manner in accordance with local and national Process referrals to the eye screening service and from the service to the hospital Ophthalmology Liaise with colleagues to ensure full utilisation of all available screening and outpatient Provide administrative support to the Engagement Lead to ensure projects and targeted clinics run smoothly and efficiently, including the contacting of patients, and booking of Utilise the OptoMize, Lorenzo and Medisoft software packages to check the patients care Carry out other administrative tasks commensurate with the grade.

The Sheffield Diabetic Eye Screening Service serves a population of more than 37000 people with diabetes. Diabetic eye screening is a key part of diabetes care. People with Diabetes are at risk of damage from Diabetic Retinopathy, a condition that can lead to sight loss if it is not treated.

The Service provides photographic eye screening and examination of the images to detect sight threatening retinopathy. The Service also works directly with the Ophthalmology Department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to ensure that patients requiring further tests and/or treatment receive seamless and timely care.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

Educated to GCSE standard (or equivalent) including English and Maths at grades C/4 or above.

Desirable

NVQ Level 2 or above in Care ECDL

Experience

Essential

Experience of working with patients or customers

Desirable

Experience of working in a caring environment Experience of diabetic eye screening Previous NHS experience Previous experience of Trust data systems

Further Training

Essential

Ability and willingness to undertake and successfully complete the required units within the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners (Diabetic Eye) Ability and willingness to undertake and successfully complete the British Association of Retinal Screeners Diabetic Eye Screening Administration Certificate Ability and willingness to undergo further training as necessary.
