The Directorate of Ophthalmology is seeking to recruit a Retinal Screener/Grader for the Sheffield Diabetic Retinopathy Eye Screening Service. Trainees will start on Band 3 before progressing to Band 4 when fully qualified.

The service currently provides screening at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals in addition to more than 15 community locations across Sheffield and is offering an exciting opportunity to join a growing and committed team in providing a comprehensive screening service to more than 35,000 patients.

The aim of the Sheffield Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is to reduce the risk of sight loss amongst people with diabetes, by the prompt identification and effective treatment of sight threatening diabetic retinopathy, at the appropriate stage during the disease process.

This will be achieved through a systematic screening process involving digital photography of the retina and by a multi-stage image grading process to identify the changes of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in the retina; referring to hospital eye services where appropriate.

To provide a comprehensive Diabetic Eye Screening Service, including retinal imaging and interpretation of retinal images.

Undertakes primary interpretation of results and provision of reports.

Works collaboratively on a day-to day basis with others to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service.

Responsible for undertaking analysis to support the quality assurance of grading in the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 3 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 4.

Please note this vacancy can be a training post so all applicant/s will start at Band 3 and upon completion of necessary skills and/or training will progress to Band 4.
