Job summary

Are you a mental health nurse looking to support mental health patients in crisis ?

Are you a passionate mental health nurse who has passion for improving patient care and treatment ?

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced mental health nurse to join a developing team who have the aspiration to deliver excellence in care for any mental health patients who attend the acute trust.

The post holder will be supported by the Matron for mental health and will work with the divisional teams to support patients. The post holder will support training, governance and completion of projects of work.

This post is to work in collaboration with the wider mental health services at Walsall Healthcare Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be in visible and present within the hospital . The post holder will build relationships across the organisation and with external partner agencies that support the care and treatment of mental health patients.

Play a pivotal role in supporting and managing mental health patients that attend or are admitted to The Royal Wolverhampton Trust.

Be supported by the wider Mental Health Team within The Royal Wolverhampton Trust.

Provide short term intervention for patients that attend hospital and present with mental health crisis in the acute hospital.

Support with preventing admission and ensuring safe and effective treatment is given to the patient.

Work closely with partner agencies when required to support with the patients care and treatment.

Support MDT working

Form part of the escalation process and support for the acute trust staff.

be flexible to the needs of the patients and wider staff within the organisation

To be a source of expert advice when required

to build relationships with partner organisations and services to improve collaborative working and patient care.

Work with patients of all ages; this will include CAMHS and older adults.

This is an autonomous role for an accountable practitioner within a mental health team to offer mental health support within an acute hospital.

Job responsibilities

To manage and support quality performance and clinical activity by providing professional nursing leadership and guidance, clinical advice and management in relation to the key dimensions of health care quality:

Patient safety

The effectiveness of all health care interventions

Patient experience

The environment in which care is delivered

Demonstrate a high level of skill in assessing and managing risk, including clinical as well as generic risk assessment.

To support the Emergency Department staff in the management of risk presented by patients presenting with mental health needs including completing and contributing to robust risk assessments and risk management plans.

Based on the assessment, to formulate and convey sensitive, complex and sometimes unwelcome information to clients and other professionals and manage this as constructively as possible.

To provide an excellent working knowledge of safeguarding skills and supporting complex patient presentations.

To work as a competent practitioner providing clinically effective advice about interventions for patients taking into account the complexities of their mental health problems. This requires an awareness of the potential impact of wider systems on service provision, staffing, patients and families, requiring intense concentration over prolonged periods on a daily basis.

To be able to assess and provide the appropriate guidance and advice to departments and staff.

To provide the delivery of excellent nursing care in accordance with up to date evidence based professional practice

To provide the acute trust with advanced mental health expertise

To act as a resource in caring for mental health patients and liaising with stakeholders to ensure excellent patient care is delivered.

To offer advice and guidance on the use of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act including the use of Section 136 of MHA 1983

To work with the Mental Health Lead Nurse, Matron for Mental Health and Mental Health Clinical Governance Manager to monitor and respond to Clinical Incidents involving Mental Health within the acute trust.

Person Specification

Experience/Skills

Essential

Experience in working within crisis / front line mental health services Evidence of continued learning and development Experience of working with complex patients

Desirable

Working within crisis services Experience of further education Experience of working in other specialist mental health teams that manage complex patients

Qualifications

Essential

NMC Registration Nurse/ NMC Registration Midwife Relevant post graduate specialist qualification

Desirable

Non-medical prescribing qualification or ability to complete within 18 months of appointment Crisis , Liasion or Home treatment experience at Band 6 level
