Description

The Engineering function in Ultra supports the hardware development lifecycle consisting of requirements analysis, design, implementation, test and verification in order to deliver electronic or electrical components and subassemblies into projects and products.


A professional at this grade applies technical / professional knowledge, making independent judgements based on practice and significant previous experience to support decision making. Often seen as a referral point or more senior team member to escalate more complex problems. Roles will act independently with minimal guidance, and may act as project managers/formal mentors for junior staff.
 

Purpose of Role

Ultra Maritime has an exciting opportunity for a full-time or 2 part-time Component Engineer(s) to contribute to and support the electronics and mechanical engineering teams across our Loudwater, Greenford and Weymouth sites in the UK.  In this role you can be office based or home based (occasional travel to site may be needed). This home function of this role shall be in the Support Engineering Function, reporting to the Head Of Support/Deputy head Of Support.

In this role you will be specialising in Maritime Defence projects, that range from tens of £k to several £M, we will provide the successful engineer the opportunity to grow and develop their skills across a wide range of projects. Naturally you will be comfortable sharing workloads of others and able to work closely with the team to achieve team goals.

In this role you will form part of a developing team, of Component engineers working together to provide management and maintenance of the component database and mitigation of obsolescence and compliance issues.

Ideally you will be familiar with the defence industry or have demonstrable skills in Electronic and/or Mechanical component management.
 

Key Responsibilities as a Components Engineer

  • Working with the Electronic and Mechanical functions to support their component activities, including:

    • Obsolescence identification and supporting the mitigation/resolution.

    • Management of the ERP database and providing support to its engineering users.

    • Carrying out all activities to appropriate engineering processes and procedures.

  • Assisting in component selection to meet specific customer requirements (and relevant standards).

  • Keeping abreast of current legislation (and upcoming changes) and ensuring it is adhered to within your own work and instructing/reviewing others to ensure they meet the requirements

  • Responsible for providing planning and estimation input into Project Managers at the kick-off of new projects

  • Freedom to take on the responsibility to update/amend process/procedures followed by the team as changes to legislation are identified or when cost/time improvements can be realised.

  • To identify and support other depts. in the resolution of qualification, compliance and safety issues.

  • To support component risk identification and mitigation activities.

  • Coaching and mentoring of more junior Engineers

  • Liaising with both internal departments and external suppliers.

  • Demonstrable experience in working closely within a team.

Skills, Qualification and Experience as a Components Engineer

  • HNC/HND or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electronics/Mechanical or a relevant subject,

  • Good knowledge/understanding of component legislation and materials safety standards

  • Experience of the whole product lifecycle within a defence or aviation environment.

  • Knowledge of Component Engineering best practices, methodologies, processes and tools.

  • Familiarity with one or more PMRP tools (IFS desirable) and/or SQL database experience.
