The Manufacturing Design Engineer (Jigs & Fixtures) role is responsible for defining and delivering fixtures and tooling to support production to manufacture high quality vehicles across all models undertaken by Gordon Murray Automotive. Working together with production engineering, GMA production technicians, and cross-functionally with the wider engineering group, you will form a pivotal role maximising production output whilst delivering vehicles to strict GMA quality targets and H&S deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
  • Working closely with production engineering to identify and scope requirements for jigs and fixtures.
  • Designing and implementing jigs, fixtures, and tooling to aid assembly of vehicles.
  • Managing the design process from concept through to implementation.
  • Identification and selection of engineering materials.
  • A hands-on approach to work and ability to work cross functionally across all engineering and business units.
  • Working with Purchasing to obtain quotations and raising purchase requests.
  • Maintenance and updating the tooling register.
  • Support with virtual build assessments of current and new vehicles.
  • Managing the tooling budget to assisting with department budget tracking.
  • Ownership & maintenance of Manufacturing department CAD and facility planning data.
  • Staying current with product specifications, engineering technology and production processes.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Ability to use CATIA V5 software to a high level including parametric modelling & 2D drawing knowledge.
  • Vehicle/System assembly knowledge
  • GD&T & geometric tolerancing
  • Ability to create clean sheet design solutions 
  • Experience of working with 3D printed parts
  • Bill of Materials experience.
  • Experience of New Product Introduction in an automotive or highly regulated industry.
  • Materials experience, composite knowledge, sheet metal, aluminum framing structures and rapid prototyping.
  • PLM experience, ideally 3DX / Teamcenter.
  • Drawing ISO standards knowledge.
  • Automotive commercial awareness (purchasing & quotations).
  • Relevant manufacturing/engineering degree preferred. Equivalent work experience considered.
  • Clear and effective communicator (written and verbal) with the ability to communicate complex engineering solutions effectively.
  • A pro-active approach and an ability to own and manage your own activities.
  • Strong ability to lead problem solving activities within an automotive assembly environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Must be a team player.
