My client is an established SME building bespoke mechanical handling equipment and are growing their sales department to stay on top of incoming enquiries as well as developing new and existing clients. Generally, their equipment is sold into the Subsea and offshore industry so any experience of selling capital equipment in this area is highly advantageous.

As External Sales Engineer you will carry out all sales related aspects of the job to include developing enquiries, proposing the right solutions for customers and following sometimes prolonged tendering processes through to winning orders. Day-day duties will include:

  • Review customer RFQs with sales and engineering teams to appraise specifications and propose an appropriate technical solution, deciding which equipment is to be offered.
  • Support the costing function in obtaining prices for materials, sub-contract activities and consumables.
  • Preparing quotations in response to customer RFQs, including technical descriptions of the offered solution, specification points, completion of conformance matrices, etc.
  • Support the sales team in seeking sales, upsell and/or marketing opportunities, where appropriate.
  • Attending sales meetings with customers for bid clarification, where required.
  • Assisting sales order administration, conduct contract reviews where necessary and assist in project management when required.
  • Carrying out such additional tasks as may become necessary from time to time to ensure the smooth running of the sales operation.

To succeed in the role of External Sales Engineer you will need to possess the following skills and experience:

  • Preferably educated to HNC or Degree level in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or commensurate experience.
  • Experience selling capital equipment is essential although candidates with experience selling consumables, components or services to the subsea and offshore industry will have useful skills for the role
  • You must demonstrate strong sales, negotiation and communication skills
  • Longevity of service in current and past roles is a must
  • A track record in preparing and presenting details technical proposals around bespoke machinery, mechanical handling equipment or general capital equipment  
  • Professional and commercial approach with a willingness to be on the shopfloor as required to develop technical knowledge
  • Candidates should live a commutable distance as hybrid working is not available in the short term
