Job overview

This post will provide clinical pharmacy strategic leadership across the various domains of our Adult Community Services (ACS) Integrated Clinical Service Unit (ICSU) and ensure robust governance arrangements exist within pathways including the safe and secure handling of medication.

The Whittington provides community services primarily to Islington and Haringey. The range of services is significant, including all community nursing, long term conditions, rehabilitation, Podiatry, Virtual Wards and specialist frailty and MSK teams.

The post will coordinate the work of the rapidly expanding community services pharmacy team currently working across the ACS ICSU and provide expert clinical and professional leadership for these team members.

The post will develop the role of pharmacy within ACS and demonstrate how pharmacy can support the provision of excellent care to our patients in the community through the development of new care pathways.

The role will support development of our already integrated pharmacy workforce within this clinical domain and work with partners across the North Central London (NCL) system, to support clinical development of the pharmacy workforce as a wholein line with the NCL Improving Pharmacy and Medicines [IPMO] Transformation Plan.

Main duties of the job

To strategically lead, develop and implement a high quality, effective pharmacy service across the domains of our ACS ICSU To lead on Medicines Management activities within the ACS ICSU, providing support to the wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and ensure the safe and effective use of medications in all areas where medications are stored, supplied and issued to patients. To support the Deputy Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Services with the development of integrated clinical pharmacy provision within this ICSU. To support the Whittington Health NHS Trust becoming realise its potential as an integrated care organisation (ICO) To work with local care partners (such as GP federations, Primary Care Networks and community pharmacy colleagues) to strengthen and further develop pathways to provide seamless care to our patients based in NCL. Demonstration of expert clinical knowledge, reason and judgement To lead service development and the implementation of national guidance in medicines management for older people across primary care and identify research opportunities for collaborative working with local academic partners. To act as a leader, mentor and role model to junior staff within the ACS Pharmacy team. Promote high quality and cost-effective prescribing, along with identifying and promoting best practice. Act as clinical point of contact for pharmacy teams working within ACS and when required provide input in the design of new integrated care pathways.

Education /Qualifications

Essential criteria

MPharm (or equivalent) Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Further post graduate qualification Diploma/MSc in Pharmacy Practice or Clinical Pharmacy, or equivalent

Desirable criteria

Member of relevant professional clinical groups (e.g. UKCPA) Independent Prescriber Management/Leadership qualification Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

Good written and oral communication skills and able to communicate with patients and all grades of healthcare staff (verbally and in writing). Can identify a vision for the delivery of pharmaceutical services to Adult Community Services and how Integrated Care will impact the delivery of pharmacy services Prioritisation and time management, and when under pressure Good negotiation skills and the ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management. Experience of providing education and training to pharmacy and nursing staff, doctors and other AHPs. Ability to manage budget and use financial data to forecast cost saving and financial efficiencies Confident & assertive when dealing with other professionals Good problem solving skills Excellent numeracy skills and analysis and interpretation of data Ability to contribute to planning of service developments, and to manage change Ability to identify and manage risk. Ability to work alone and as part of a team. Ability to manage difficult and ambiguous situations including those that may require prompt decisions when faced with highly complex drug information and situations. Demonstrates a whole system patient focused approach to work. Demonstrates the ability to communicate complex information combined with good negotiating and presentation skills Ability to interpret national service guidance and implement change at a local level Experience of dealing with professional conflict and patient complaints Able to confidently articulate their leadership style and describe how this may change in practice

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

Knowledge of legislation relating to the procurement, storage, supply, and use of medicines. Appropriate and current clinical experience in at least one of the following, polypharmacy, Deprescribing, frailty, elderly care. Experience of managing a team and delivering staff appraisals and development plans Experience of community health services Significant post registration hospital pharmacy experience at a senior level Proven experience of working at a strategic level with senior clinicians and managers Experience of working within a fully integrated healthcare team Experience of working at a strategic level across the wider health community (working with GPs, CCGs and social care services) Experience budget management or monitoring ability and demonstrable success in achieving savings Provision of drug usage and expenditure reports and use of financial reports to influence business cases and clinical practice Experience of medicines related policy development and implementation Experience of leading a change management project at a pharmacy level An understanding of national and local policies linked to this clinical area A detailed understanding of clinical governance and how this would apply to this role. Knowledge of NCL health system and wider IPMO agenda An understanding of national and local policies linked to this clinical area
