The Neuro rehab service is made up of a pathway of teams and services working across in-patient (Staples acute and rehab Stroke and Neuro ward), community (Early Supported Discharge) and outpatient settings to provide specialist, evidence-based Neuro rehab to patients following stroke or other neurological diagnosis.

The current vacancy is based within the Neuro rehab out-patient service. The team see patients with a long-term neurological diagnosis such as MS, Parkinsons disease, stroke and FND as well as a range of other neurological conditions.

The team consists of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, a Rehab Practitioner and an Exercise Specialist Practitioner. They link closely with the broader Neurology services coordinating weekly MDT’s which foster excellent working relationships with the Neurologists and Clinical Nurse specialists.

Under the Neuro rehab out-patient umbrella we provide a range of established services include a spasticity interface service, which provides multi-dimensional spasticity management within a single clinic setting including botulinum toxin injection services, postural care advice and intervention, splinting assessment and exercise review and advice. We also have a Neuro rehab hydrotherapy service, FES service and a range of rehab groups and classes which are largely run by a dedicated Exercise Specialist Practitioner.

This post provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to lead a team of staff who are innovative and dynamic. We continuously review models of delivery to provide services that optimise rehab opportunities for our patients. Recent developments include a newly diagnosed Parkinson’s education and exercise group, a direct signposting pathway to the ACP Physiotherapist to assess patients from the neurology waiting list, and we are currently reviewing delivery of psychology services with a plan to trial a different model of delivering wellbeing support to our patients. You will work alongside like-minded senior staff in a collaborative and supportive way to continue to develop our services in line with patient need and trust wide directives.

The Neuro rehab service has a proven track record in development of our staff and opportunities for career development. We have number of senior staff trained to MSc level, and have recently introduced advanced clinical practice and consultant AHP roles within the team. The Therapy team is at the forefront of innovation and development, in both our services and our people. Innovation is central to therapies at the Royal Devon University NHS Foundation Trust, demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead. We are not afraid of adopting new techniques, as shown by the introduction of our ultrasound-guided injection therapy in Orthopaedic and Neurology pathways.

North Devon also offers a scenic and beautiful place to live. The Hospital is close to a dramatic coastline and surrounded by green pastures, rugged moors and pockets of woodland. Many of the staff in our department value the opportunity to leave work and be minutes away from a surf or long walk on the beach.

Working Pattern:  hours per week, 4 days a weekwith weekend working requirements (1 weekend day in 6 weeks)
