In a nutshell 

You will provide effective and timely legal advice on a broad range of specialist and complex regulatory and product law matters to the Bank and its subsidiaries (including Argos Financial Services). Reporting to the Head of Regulatory and Product Law this role will be responsible for:

supporting key strategic activity of Sainsbury’s Bank/Argos Financial Services, in particular its withdrawal as a provider of core banking products, and the development of a new financial services offering for the Sainsbury’s group providing targeted, commercially focussed regulatory legal advice on a broad and varied range of matters including product management, operational processes, regulatory issues, customer documentation and product supply agreements providing sound legal advice on retail banking legislation, including the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and the Payment Services Regulations providing advice to the business on other relevant areas of law affecting customers, including bereavement, insolvency and power of attorneys/guardianship working closely with external advisers in the development and implementation of solutions intended to support business strategy supporting the management and resolution of customer claims identifying regulatory legal risks and changes in regulation, regulatory approach and best practice to the business and proactively working with them to manage strategy and minimise impacts; supporting the preparation of a monthly “Horizon Scanning” report for business colleagues championing good governance and challenging appropriately when governance is not being followed pro-actively building and maintaining relationships with business stakeholders (and helping to deliver training to the business as required) building and fostering relationships with the wider Sainsbury’s Group Legal Services team

What you need to do

Demonstrate awareness of the Bank's practice areas and business strategy Work collaboratively with colleagues and business stakeholders across the Sainsbury’s Group to ensure our products and business processes continue to provide legally compliant and good outcomes for customers and our business Identify and appropriately escalate high risk or complex issues to the Head of Regulatory and Product Law Develop relationships as a key trusted adviser, taking the time to understand the relevant business areas to be able to provide targeted and relevant advice Analyse legal and commercial issues in detail and be able to explain complex issues  Draft advice, product terms, legal correspondence and other complex documents in plain English with minimal or no supervision Take instructions from internal business stakeholders and translate them into appropriate action Assemble research methodically and produce clear, accurate findings  Play a full part in the work of the Group Legal Services team regardless of location, collaborating with other lawyers on shared projects and making efficient use of the overall legal resource Comply with all relevant risk management policies and procedures

What you need to know and show

A qualified retail banking/regulatory lawyer in financial services or at a UK leading firm with general experience in financial services/banking Experience of the Consumer Credit Act, Payment Services Regulations; working knowledge of FCA Conduct of Business requirements Ability to develop relationships as a key trusted adviser, taking the time to understand priorities for relevant business areas to be able to provide targeted and relevant advice Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and business stakeholders across Sainsbury’s Group  Ability to act decisively (but safely) in a fast-paced business environment Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a wider team  Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal; ability to communicate and influence at all levels  Management of own time efficiently; ability to manage effectively competing business priorities
