Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Clinical Technologist with a to take up the post of Senior Clinical Technologist (Radiation Engineering) in the forward thinking Technical Services (Medical Physics) team at UHB.

We have around 50 scientific and technical staff working in conjunction with clinical colleagues to provide approximately 4,500 new patients per year with World Class radiotherapy treatments, utilising 6 Elekta Versas with FFF, a Tomotherapy HD, a Radixact unit with kVCT imaging, and a Cyberknife unit. We also have two wide-bore CT scanners, a dedicated HDR suite and an XStrahl orthovoltage system. Our new equipment programme means an on-site MRI scanner and a second Radixact will be installed soon.

A successful candidate will contribute to the maintenance, calibration and quality control of many of these devices - an excellent development opportunity for the ambitious linac engineer / clinical technologist.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of a team of Clinical Technologists within Medical Physics Technical Services (MPTS) engaged in the maintenance, modification, calibration and Quality Assurance of highly complex clinical equipment - predominantly linear accelerators used by the radiotherapy service.

They will be required to perform to extremely high standards of accuracy and safety in order that clinical equipment operates efficiently and safely with a minimum of downtime.

The post holder takes charge of equipment experiencing downtime, communicating effectively and professionally with other technologists, radiographers, clinical scientists, manufacturers and others, in order to ensure timely and effective repair and quality assurance is performed, and that the clinical service can plan for its return to use.

Qualifications

Essential

BEng Hons in Electronic/ Mechanical Engineering or equivalent as well as additional knowledge and experience in radiation engineering equivalent to Post Graduate Diploma level. Registered Clinical Technologist, or eligible for equivalence process.

Experience

Specialist knowledge of radiotherapy equipment and facilities including HT generation, RF systems, high vacuum systems and safety-critical real-time computer control. Extensive specialist knowledge of analogue, digital and power electronic components, devices, systems and design, electro-mechanical systems and equipment support and repair. Evidence of Continued Professional Development in Medical Physics especially in the field of electronics engineering applied to radiotherapy technologies. Good working knowledge and practical experience of a range of specialist treatment machine Quality Control procedures including radiation dosimetry and adjustment of radiation beam parameters. Knowledge of the hazards, including ionising radiation, encountered in medical equipment maintenance and production activities and the necessary precautions required. Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or human error and of the critical requirement for accuracy in Quality Control of radiotherapy equipment. Knowledge of the NHS working environment within a quality management system ( ISO9001:2015). Comprehension of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, procedures and practices, ISO 9001:2015, relevant BSI and ISO standards, Health and Safety at Work Act, RIDDOR, COSHH, IRR, IR(ME)R, Data Protection Act and Caldicott.

Desirable

Extensive practical experience and specialist expertise gained through training (including manufacturers' courses) on linear accelerators, simulators and other radiotherapy equipment, associated radiotherapy systems ( Treatment Management System) and associated Medical Physics equipment ( dosimetry equipment) Practical experience in electronics technology procedures, techniques, design (including CAD) and the use of sophisticated diagnostic equipment. Experience of using practical and mechanical skills to implement the repair and replacement of parts on complex mechanical systems.
