Learning Support Assistant required for secondary schools in the Havant areaAbout the Role:

We are looking for a dedicated and empathetic Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to work in a secondary school setting, specialising in supporting students with Autism and ADHD. Your role will involve working with students aged 11-16, providing crucial support to help them access the curriculum, develop social skills, and achieve their potential.

You will work closely with the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), classroom teachers, and other support staff to create a learning environment that is inclusive, positive, and focused on the needs of students with additional learning requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 or small group support to secondary school students with Autism and ADHD, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Assist students in accessing a broad and balanced curriculum, adapting lesson plans and learning materials to meet their individual needs.
  • Work alongside subject teachers to implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
  • Help students build confidence, develop social skills, and enhance emotional regulation in a secondary school setting.
  • Monitor and record student progress, reporting regularly to teaching staff, SENCO, and parents.
  • Support students during key transition periods, including moving between lessons and preparing for exams.
  • Use positive behaviour management techniques to manage challenging behaviour in a calm and supportive manner.
  • Encourage students' independence and participation in school activities, including extra-curricular programmes.
  • Work with other professionals (such as educational psychologists and therapists) to ensure that students receive holistic and effective support.
Requirements:
  • Previous experience supporting secondary school students with Autism, ADHD, or other special educational needs (SEN).
  • A strong understanding of how Autism and ADHD can impact learning, particularly at the secondary level, including issues related to behaviour, communication, and social interaction.
  • Patience, empathy, and a supportive approach to working with adolescents who have additional needs.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • The ability to manage and defuse challenging situations calmly and constructively.
  • An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to apply for one).
  • Relevant qualifications in supporting teaching and learning (desirable but not essential).
