Job overview

Redbridge Refugee Psychology Service is a specialist psychology service supporting adult refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced traumas, such as human trafficking, torture and war and/or traumas on their journey to the UK. The post holder will be joining a diverse and vibrant team committed to working with refugees and asylum seekers in a manner that centres social justice and anti-oppressive practices.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be joining a psychology led team working to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the borough of Redbridge. The post holder will be expected to offer psychological assessment and therapy to adult (aged 18+) asylum seekers and refugees who have experienced trauma. The post holder will work with the wider team to continue forging closer working links with the volunteer and community sector and to provide training, teaching and consultation to other services working with refugees and asylum seekers within the trust.

The post holder will be expected to supervise and support trainee clinical psychologists, aspire assistant psychologists and students on placements within the team. 

The post holder should be sensitive to working with a culturally diverse community and comfortable working with interpreters. They should be able to demonstrate cultural humility in their work and be committed to actively engaging in anti-oppressive practices and advocating for marginalised groups.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,313 to a maximum of £5,436 pro rata for part time).

High Cost Area Supplement - Fringe

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 5% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £1,192 to a maximum of £2,011 pro rata for part time).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will carry out professionally based duties and responsibilities in the following areas:

To provide a specialist and holistic assessment to adult asylum seeker and refugees who present with complex needs that require specialist intervention. To offer specialist trauma informed interventions that are culturally sensitive and evidence-based. To offer culturally appropriate interventions that mobilise individual and collective strengths and are based on genuine partnership and collaboration, actively involving the service users in decision making in order to contribute to long-term empowerment. To address emotional distress that asylum seekers and refugees experience in a non-stigmatising context. To support clients by writing reports and documenting difficulties for immigration authorities and other bodies when appropriate. To work with refugee community organisations and key representative to increase their understanding and management of mental health difficulties and services so that they are able to advise and support service users. To contribute to the development and facilitation of group work where appropriate. To liaise with other professional within Mental health and Wellness Teams, Talking Therapies, GPs, social care and safeguarding services as appropriate to ensure the safety and wellbeing of asylum seekers and refugees. To reduce the need for crisis-led/statutory services in the short, medium and long term.

Essential criteria

Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specifically two or more distinct psychological therapies.

Experience

Experience working with refugee and asylum seeking populations Experience in the delivery of evidence based interventions with clients presenting with trauma Experience conducting holistic specialist psychological assessments with refugees and asylum seekers

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

Knowledge and understanding of evidence base related to psychological interventions for people with trauma Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
