Main duties of the job

Working across sites at Highbury Hospital (NG6) & Blossomwood (NG17)

Our inpatient wards provide multi-disciplinary assessments and treatments for people of any age suffering from dementia and those people over the age of 65 years who are experiencing mental health problems.

Having a positive attitude towards working with people with mental health problems is essential. It is not essential to have worked in this environment previously - there will be opportunity to grow and expand your mental health skills being supported by dedicated senior staff including a Physiotherapy Clinical Specialist.

Role of Physiotherapy

Sitting within an Allied Health Professional (AHP) Team including Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics & Support Staff. Working within the AHP and larger inpatient multi-disciplinary team. Falls risk assessment and implementing plans to decrease risk of falling. Assessment of functional mobility. Occasional home visits. Assessing the requirement for mobility aids. Advise on ways to increase stamina/exercise tolerance/fitness. Formulating and implementing treatment plans. Assessment and treatment of specific musculoskeletal complaints. Assessment and treatment/management of physical problems related to neurological conditions. Assessment and treatment/management of respiratory conditions. To encourage and facilitate regular physical activity to benefit physical and mental health and well-being. To refer to other services as appropriate.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide physiotherapy to individuals with mental health needs including dementia who are referred to the service.

To ensure a high-quality physiotherapy service is provided through multi-disciplinary, multi-agency working. To carry out specialist assessment, goal setting, implementation of treatment programmes and evaluation which seek to work in partnership with service users and their carers in a recovery and positive risk-taking approach.

To represent and promote the specialist role of physiotherapy within the team including involvement with service planning and development.

Professional support will be provided by the Physiotherapy Clinical Specialist and AHP Lead.

The post holder will link into the wider physiotherapy network in Nottingham and will work cooperatively with colleagues to ensure high quality service provision and gain opportunities for support and continual professional development opportunities.

To contribute to the supervision of band 5 rotational physiotherapist and support staff working on the wards.

To contribute to the supervision and clinical support of physiotherapy students on placement in the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications - Academic / Professional memberships

Essential

BSc Hons Physiotherapy or equivalent Current HCPC registration

Desirable

Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Formal accreditation for student practice placement education

Contractual requirements

Essential

Requirement to work across sites and occasional requirement to visit different sites across the county including home visits.

Physical Requirements

Essential

There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods per working day. Able to undertake rehabilitation and moving and handling activities with clients and equipment.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

A working knowledge of a range of physiotherapy assessments and interventions. Experience of multidisciplinary team working Knowledge of the issues associated with people who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Evidence of strong commitment to team and partnership working Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written, verbal and electronic Experience of audit

Desirable
