Band 7 Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology Physiotherapist and Team lead


We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated individual for an exciting role as band 7 cardiothoracic and cardiology physiotherapist and team leader at city hospital.

The post holder will lead the physiotherapy service alongside the highly specialised band 7 physiotherapist.

This service covers:

  • Barclay Thoracic Unit
  • 10 bedded Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
  • 6 bedded Cardiac High Dependency Unit.
  • Acute Coronary Care Unit
  • Cardiac Surgery Ward
  • Cardiology wards
Cardiothoracic and cardiology physiotherapy is nested within a wider team including critical care and surgery.

This post will team lead in conjunction with the team lead for critical care and surgery; some clinical cross cover will be required at times.


Alongside a direct patient-facing caseload, team leadership will include supporting the team to offer high quality patient care by monitoring performance, taking a strategic role in service development and workforce planning, supporting supervision, development conversations and ensuring we have resources and equipment required for our roles.


Development opportunities include peer support from band 7's across the wider acute inpatient team, plus support from the clinical specialist physiotherapist for thoracics and the therapy services manager through supervision, informal mentoring and appraisal.

This post requires a wide range of respiratory experience. Specific experience of working in cardiothoracic surgery and critical care is essential.

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leading the physiotherapy service in a growing service to provide a responsive respiratory service to acutely unwell patients when required
  • Providing a supportive and learning environment for team members under your direct management including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing
  • Contributing to the education and teaching of students, preceptees and therapy support workers, including training new staff for weekend and respiratory duties when required
  • Leading and participating in weekend respiratory service at city campus of NUH which incorporates respiratory medicine, cystic fibrosis unit, Cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery and critical care.
  • Alongside the wider inpatient team, supporting the management and participation in late shifts, weekends and the out of hours service.
  • Ensuring high quality, evidence based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.
  • Ensuring the NUH values and behaviours are embedded in everyday practice

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH.

We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, working together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to.

Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists.

We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff.

There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

  • Permanent 0.8 WTE (30 hours) Band 7 post
  • Working days for this post will ideally be Tuesday
  • Friday (Friday essential)
  • Additional duties will include participation in on call and weekend working as well as a late shifts (19PM). Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of 1:4, an oncall average 1 per month and late shifts approximately 12 per month but all are dependent on service need and staffing levels
