Job summary

We currently have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic Band 6 Therapeutic Research Radiographer (with HCPC registration) based at the Christie main site at Withington.

The purpose of the role is to facilitate and support the clinical MR Linac operations as well as the development, implementation and management of MR Linac related clinical trials.

In order to support the delivery of care to patients on the MR Linac as well as the development , implementation and management of clinical supporting the radiotherapy related research group work packages, we are looking for a highly motivated therapy radiographer join our team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be working with patients, supporting the development of innovative therapies and treatment regimens for cancer patients primarily on the MR Linac. The Enhanced Practice Therapeutic Radiographer (MRL and Radiotherapy Trials) will work within the clinical radiotherapy and research teams, taking direction from the Advanced and Principal Research Radiographers, participating in all aspects of MR Linac based research, imaging and treatment delivery.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate and supervise in all pre-treatment imaging, treatment delivery and MR image guidance radiotherapy (MRIgRT) for patients across the MR-Linac service. Ensure accurate and safe delivery of highly complex treatment plans and to act as a treatment delivery and MRIgRT expert. Give information at an appropriate level of understanding to ensure a patient is fully informed along all stages of the patient pathway. Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and their families/carers by offering support, treatment information and advice on side effects. Provide an important point of contact for the patient and carers both during and after completion of treatment, ensuring continuation of care. Assess and troubleshoot patient care issues, provide support, advice and referrals where appropriate Plan and prioritise workloads organise daily schedule and acceptance of trial patients Be responsible for the equipment in the work area, ensuring that fault reporting and handover procedures are followed, working closely with medical physics and technical services staff to ensure that repairs and routine servicing of equipment is carried out with minimal disruption to service provision. Ensuring all errors in the designated area are reported in a timely manner in accordance with current departmental policy. Analyse systematically and evaluate all data and information relevant to patients diagnosis, ensuring the patient and their relatives are treated with dignity and respect at all times. Communicate confidential sensitive information, and provide emotional support, to patients and their carers/relatives including children and the terminally ill. Provide information to patients and their carers with regard to the radiotherapy pathway and expected side effects. To communicate accurate and timely information with all other disciplines involved along the patients pathway. With the team on the unit, patients and the wider multidisciplinary team manage areas of conflict and escalate as necessary. Anticipate and identify common and complex treatment related side effects, offering advice and where necessary refer to other relevant health care professionals. To provide, receive and use sensitive information maintaining patient confidentiality at all times in line with information governance legislation Apply safe and effective moving and handling skills in order to protect patients and staff and abide by Health and safety legislation in the work place. Minimise risk of cross infection through contamination by bodily fluids/matter. In accordance of the infection control policy To implement the procedures and work instructions described for the MR-Linac in accredited quality management system and report any variances Contribute to development of the quality management system by reviewing and writing work instructions and operating procedures. Ensure all work and actions comply with local rules and current UK Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 and IR(ME)R 2000. Ensure all work and actions comply with local rules and current MHRA guidance for the clinical use of magnetic resonance Be aware of and participate in the audit and research within the department and the implementation of new processes and techniques. Undertake training and competency to dispense medication under Patient Group Direction (PGD) Any other duties negotiated with the post holder, to develop their role in the organisation To achieve all the competencies as outlined by the radiotherapy education/research teams within a time period as outlined by line manager.

Supervisory & managerial

As a band 6 you will be expected to lead, co-ordinate, supervise and manage a team of staff operating radiotherapy equipment and act as lead practitioner, making assessments and key decisions in regard to workload management, patient care and treatment.

Act as an advocate for The Christie, and the profession, at national and international forums and vendor meetings. Continually assess and monitor risk in their practice and that of others, challenging others as appropriate

Teaching and training

As a band 6 you will be expected to provide mentorship and guidance for junior staff and be a good role model. Participate in an annual Personal Development Review. Attend all essential training and clinical updates as required and ensure your team also attend all relevant training. Be capable of assimilating new ideas and techniques and have an ability to assess their value. Assist in the supervision and training/teaching of pre-registration students and new members of staff. Highlight to line manager all issues of inadequate performance, including capability and poor professional standards, for students and employees. Provide evidence where necessary and requested Supervise and manage pre-registration student training in accordance with trust/university policy. Ensure that opportunities for clinical audit, research and technical developments are identified and that staff are encouraged to participate in relevant projects. Support the learning needs of the wider multidisciplinary team, including clinicians and physicists

Qualifications

Essential

DCR(T) or BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiographer State Registered Therapeutic Radiographer. HPC Registration.
