Band 5 -Neonatal Community Outreach Staff Nurse

Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham Women's and Children's have developed a joint partnership Neonatal Community Outreach Service (NCOT). NCOT is a team of neonatal nurses providing nursing care to premature babies in their home environment.

NCOT operate a 7-day service working from 8am -- 6pm this also includes bank holidays. Successful candidates will be required to work between the Neonatal in-patient services and in the community setting. They will also need to provide cross cover on occasions between the 2 organisations.

Both Trusts have very busy maternity and neonatal services and a combined total of 18,500 deliveries per year over 4 sites. Early discharge with the Community Service supports the family integrated care approach and enables families to take their baby home at the earliest opportunity whilst continuing to receive nursing support that meets their medical needs.

We are seeking a dynamic, motivated nurse that is passionate about delivering neonatal care within the community. Applicants must be confident in neonatal care decision making and a proven autonomous neonatal practitioner therefore should have extensive neonatal experience.

As a band 5 NCOT Nurse you will work alongside the Senior NCOT Nurses and NCOT Lead Nurses to provide high quality care to families in the home environment.

Main duties of the job

The band 5 NCOT nurse will be supported by the NCOT Lead nurse and NCOT senior nurses and Multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care to babies covering a range of conditions including oxygen therapy, phototherapy, nasogastric tube (NGT) fed and babies that are less than at discharge or under 35 weeks gestation corrected.

The post holder will assess the suitability of referrals and ensure eligibility criteria is met. They will be involved with the discharge process to ensure a seamless, timely transfer from hospital to the home environment and communicate with families to prepare them for the transition home.

You will risk assess patient needs, environment and the level of treatment required during each visit. You will be required to assess, plan and implement care to meet the medical and nursing needs of the infant whilst supporting the family.

You will need recent Neonatal experience within a hospital setting to ensure you have the appropriate level of clinical knowledge which will enable you to identify deterioration or recognise improvement of the patient and adapt care plans accordingly. You will need to be confident and competent with nursing skills which include but is not limited to: blood sampling, NGT insertion, measuring observations

As a band 5 you will be required to communicate with internal and external MDT members, and be a point of contact for families.

* Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary NHS care setting (can include student placements within the last 12 months ) * Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence * Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others * Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment * Understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct * Understanding of preceptorship and work based learning and assimilation of skills and knowledge * Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context * Understanding / experience of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity
