Locum Senior Clinical Fellow - to commence on 24th June 2024 for 6 months

As a Senior clinical fellow in paediatric emergency medicine (PEM) at Sheffield Children's Hospital you will be given the opportunity to develop skills in the management of the wide breadth of presentations to the Emergency Department, including major trauma.

The post holder would be responsible for the assessment and management of patients attending the emergency department. They would also be involved with supervising junior trainees working in the department.

The post holder would work as part of a middle grade / specialty doctors rota. This job gives you the opportunity to work flexibly, with self-rostering.

Main duties of the job

Paediatric Emergency Department

The Emergency Department provides emergency services for Sheffield children less than 16 years of age. The Department sees approximately 62,000 new patients per annum.

The work of the department covers the whole range of emergency medicine problems and all grades of severity of conditions, from the most minor to the most major. Approximately 60% of the workload is trauma, and 40% medical paediatrics. In the under 2 year-olds, the proportions are 50% and 50% respectively.

Sheffield Children's hospital is a major trauma centre.

A PEM consultant is present on the shop floor every day between 8am and midnight with a consultant non-resident on call rota between midnight and are 9 ST1-2 trainees from a combination of paediatrics and GP training schemes. In addition there is a 12 X WTE S/CT3+ rota which provides middle grade cover 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This includes PEM trainees from Adult and paediatric backgrounds.

A GP is based in the department weekends and evenings seeing primary care patients.

The Emergency Department has daily consultant-led follow-up clinics as well as nurse led dressing clinics. Other Emergency Departmental interests include procedural sedation, pain management and distraction therapy, which is supported by 1 WTE Nursery Nurse, specialised in play therapy

Qualifications / Experience / Entry Requirements

Essential

Medical Degree from a recognised UK or oversees University or Institution MRCPCH, MRCEM or equivalent A minimum of 4 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time basis) at least 2 of which will be in either paediatric or emergency medicine training programme or as a fixed term speciality trainee or shall have equivalent experience and competencies. APLS or equivalent Good general medical knowledge in Paediatric Emergency Medicine Basic assessment skills of children presenting with illness and injury Able to initiate the leadership of a major trauma or medical resus case

Desirable

Diploma in Child Health Experience working at Middle Grade level (UK CT/ST3+ level or equivalent) ATLS, ETC CAT or equivalent Safeguarding Level 3 Paediatric sedation skills

Management and Clinical Governance

Demonstrate an understanding of management & clinical governance issues

Evidence of involvement with management activities and completion of governance activities

Audit / Research

An understanding of the issues of clinical effectiveness and audit Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
