This is a post for advanced midwifery practitioners, with excellent standards of clinical practice. The post is designed to provide the post holder with opportunities to develop and further enhance skills in programme planning, multi professional teaching and facilitation and communication with key stakeholders on issues related to practice development.

The post is required to work alongside team members, which includes Clinical placement Facilitators, Clinical Governance team and Senior Midwifery Team in the implementation of the practice development agenda for the maternity service, with direct reference to the CQC standards, SBL and Trust objectives.

Lead on agreed professional development activities, including mandatory training, essential to role and service activity.

Lead on preceptorship programmes and clinical placement activity in the division and the wider organisation in line with Trust policies and procedures and national guidelines.

Plan, deliver and review interventions to enable people to learn and develop. Agree with team members courses of action to address issues with their work.

Provide on a regular basis both constructive and positive feedback, identify and disseminate learning from outcomes.

Main duties of the job

Lead on the preceptorship and induction programmes for newly registered midwives and those midwives who are new to the Trust or returning to practice AND all new staff appointed to the maternity department

 In-conjunction with other members of the professional development team, assess the quality of clinical and other practice learning environments and proposes interventions for improvement.

 Contributes to the design, organisation and delivery of mandatory training and to personally participate in the delivery of mandatory training sessions.

Co-ordinate the delivery and facilitation of the multidisciplinary PROMPT sessions for all staff from the directorate required to attend.

 Deliver training and assess competency of individuals/groups through reflective practice, demonstration, observation and presentation e.g. manual handling/infection control training/mandatory training/specific clinical skills, providing verbal/written feedback as necessary.

Supports the professional development midwives in organising and facilitating the integrated midwives clinical skills development programme.

To identify the training needs of staff as identified from themes arising out of clinical incidents, reflective events, complaints and supervisory reviews

Educational

Clinical Responsibilities

 Demonstrate high level of professional leadership and represent midwifery services within the organisation and externally as required.

 Must be up to date with new research and actively encourage research projects in midwifery

 Facilitates clinical skills development of midwifery and medical staff using evidence to promote the principles of normality in a busy acute setting

 Demonstrate they are proficient in fetal heart rate interpretation and obstetric emergency drills

 Have practiced in all areas of midwifery and gained sufficient experience to teach and support other midwives in all areas of midwifery

 Be competent and confident in both adult and neonatal resuscitation and able to lecture and teach clinical skills to midwives and medical staff.

 Be able to work in all areas when requested as a Practice Development Midwife

 Supports midwifery staff in partnership with medical colleagues to develop clinical competencies when caring for women with complex pregnancies.

 Work clinically (minimum 50%) with identified staff and support workers facilitating the acquisition of clinical skills, knowledge and developing practice to support and enable embedding change in clinical practice and the achievement of learning outcomes to deliver a safe and effective service.

 Participate in departmental shift patterns where necessary, providing expert clinical care. Facilitate and support others in prioritising, implementing and evaluating patient care in accordance with trust policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

 Provide advice to midwifery team taking into account all aspects of Clinical Governance to promote and develop the use of evidence based practice to improve the outcomes of maternity care, seeking advice where necessary.

 Monitor and maintain health safety and security of self and others

 Develops a culture that promotes equality and values diversity

 Demonstrate a working knowledge and effective use of the escalation policy and participate in the Unit Co-ordinator rota.

  Professional and Leadership

 Act as an advocate for women and staff through the application of clinical knowledge and skills

 In accordance with the midwives rules, standards and professional codes, maintains own professional development and competence to practice

 At all times ensure that own actions support and promote equality, diversity and the rights of patients, the public and colleagues within the maternity health care environment.

 Acts as a role model at all times ensuring own work practices, conduct, behaviour and attitudes provide an example of professionalism for all staff.

 Promotes understanding of clinical governance in midwifery and is proactive in the development of a learning culture committed to innovation and quality improvement.

 Takes shared responsibility for the promotion of health and safety of patients, the public and staff within the directorate by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and ensuring that all trust policies are adhered to within the maternity health care environment.

 Through the provision of good leadership, supports and sustains a culture within midwifery where the team works towards a philosophy of care that enables the delivery of a high standard clinical service whilst maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients.

 In partnership with the Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology services and Clinical Governance Leads, implement a divisional Clinical Governance Strategy

 Develops proactive relationship with the Risk coordinator, and supports colleagues through attendance at Datix and risk meetings and thereby integrating lessons learned into practice

 Supports staff to develop and understand control measures that they need to put in place to reduce further risk.

 Participates in the development of a culture that encourages the identification, reporting, management of risk and implementing lessons learned.

Performance Management and Service Development.

 Assist the midwifery education lead in ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to collect data for quality analysis on students learning experience, particularly focusing on; clinical practice, skill acquisition and the achievement of competencies. As specified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council by working with practice mentors, students, lecturers, midwives and NHS Trusts clinical placement leads.

 Work in collaboration with Practice Development Midwives in reviewing and maintaining Preceptorship programme for all newly qualified midwives/RTP Midwives.

 With the education lead, work collaboratively to monitor and ensure education resources are used effectively.

 Work closely with the HEI’s to ensure that an optimum learning environment is created for students and trained staff. Participate in internal and external education reviews/audit standards.

 Work in collaboration with midwifery management and practice teams to move services forward in line with the maternity strategy, external agencies and Government initiatives

 Assist with the identification of areas for service development, propose and implement the development of policies, procedures and guidelines to support change

 Work proactively with management staff to minimise risk and ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.

 Participate in investigations into complaints, clinical incidents and medication and blood transfusion incidents as they occur, assist in improvements to practice identified as a result of these investigations.

 Ensuring that lessons learnt are fed back into student/mentor forums and clinical practice.

Other Duties

Provide cover for colleagues as appropriate.

Assist in producing ad hoc reports and in project work.
