 This role will be an integral part of the research service, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to provide a clinical trials service with a focus on both non-commercial (hosted) and commercially sponsored studies. The department is looking for someone who is highly motivated and passionate about clinical research. The post holder is responsible for leading and managing a team of clinical research staff with the responsibility for delivering high quality research and clinical care. You will work as a self-directed practitioner, have excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for leading and managing a team of clinical research staff with the responsibility for delivering high quality research and clinical care. You will work as a self-directed practitioner, have excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills and will have input into how the role develops in the long term.

The post holder will possess specialized knowledge and experience in the conduct of clinical trials and take an active role in guiding and educating others. In addition, you will be required to effectively manage your time to fulfill key duties such as reviewing trial protocols, identifying resource implications, performance monitoring and raising the profile of the Research and Innovation Department (R&I) within and outside of the trust.

 You will develop action plans to ensure agreed participant recruitment targets are met, training is in place for staff, support and mentor other members of the team, lead on service development and contribute to research business planning for the future, whilst autonomously managing a caseload of patients. You will be required to deputise for the Lead Research Nurse where necessary.

The post holder will ensure research is conducted in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) Guidelines for Research, national regulatory legal requirements and trust policy.

Working for our organisation

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be ; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care. 

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of the .

Previous use of the EDGE research database.

Experience/ Knowledge

Extensive experience at band 6 or above working within a clinical research environment.

Knowledge of assessing feasibility and capacity for trials.
