Job summary

The Ward housekeeper will work as an essential part of the ward team under the direction/guidance of the Sister/Charge Nurse or his/her nominated deputy. The focus of the role is to support the nursing team with non-clinical tasks, ensure the cleanliness of the clinical areas of the department is maintained to a very high level and help maintain a safe, clean, comfortable environment for patients.

Main duties of the job

Patient Focused Care

Being courteous and helpful to patients, families, colleagues and all users and visitors to the ward.

Provide refreshments to patients and families where appropriate.

Support ward team by underlying tasks to enhance patient care collection of laundry, pharmacy, etc.

Ensuring the bed space is prepared for the arrival of a new admission to the ward checking the area is clean, rubbish removed etc.

Maintain a safe environment in conjunction with other staff

Report any damaged equipment and required maintenance repairs to estates.

Ensure required equipment is available for use and support ward staff in sourcing temporary required equipment if other is unavailable

Ensure store rooms are clean and tidy and equipment/stock is appropriately stored

Stocks and Supplies

Assist other staff to unpack stocks and supplies where necessary recording items delivered

Assist the clinical staff in ensuring the staff room is clean and tidy before and after main staff break times

Ensure required equipment is available for use and support ward staff in sourcing temporary equipment if other is unavailable

Ensure store rooms are clean and tidy and equipment/stock is appropriately stored

Rotate stock to ensure usage of supplies as directed

Ensure the sluice and store room areas are well stocked and tidy

Ensure the sluice area, clean utility and treatment rooms are clean, tidy and free from innapropriate items on a daily basis

Key responsibilities

Patient Focused Care

Provide refreshments to patients and families where appropriate.

Support ward team by underlying tasks to enhance patient care collection of laundry, pharmacy, etc.

Ensuring the bed space is prepared for the arrival of a new admission to the ward checking the area is clean, rubbish removed etc.

Alert nurse in charge to aspects of dissatisfaction from patients complaints

Ensure required consumables are readily available to staff and patients

Maintain a safe environment in conjunction with other staff

Report any damaged equipment and required maintenance repairs to maintenance helpdesk

Assist the clinical staff in ensuring the staff room is clean and tidy before and after main staff break times

Ensure required equipment is available for use and support ward staff in sourcing temporary required equipment if other is unavailable

Ensure store rooms are clean and tidy and equipment/stock is appropriately stored

Stocks and Supplies

Cleaning

Clean medical equipment commodes, pumps, mattresses, special beds, patient monitors, etc.

Liaise with Infection Control Team regarding additional cleaning, isolation room, bed space terminal cleans, pest control

Ensure all stackers, shelving and storage units in the clinical area are kept dust free and check expiry dates of contents as per schedule

Ensure deep cleaning schedule is followed

Perform high level cleaning using appropriate equipment eg high windowsills

Liaise with the domestic cleaning team regarding areas which require special attention

Linen

Communicate with the linen services as the need arises to resolve any problems with the ward linen supply

Ensure that the linen received on the ward is of good quality and stored correctly

Ensure the wards linen cupboard is tidy and restocked as clean linen arrives on the ward

Ensure that appropriate items only are stored in the ward linen room

General duties

Meet and greet and direct patients, visitors or the public to the appropriate place on the ward

Report patient property being stored to the Nurse in charge to help ensure that this is managed in line with Trust policy

Collect notes when required in the absence of the ward clerk as directed by the nurse in charge

Co-ordinate the storage of additional ward items pumps, cot sides and mattresses

Liaise with other departments in the Trust as required to ensure the smooth running of the ward

To assist on other wards, to help cover sickness

Qualifications

Essential
